Metallurgical Chisel Photos

690 days ago by YooperCasey | 7 comments »

So after the discussion that cajunpen initiated on the WS Vs. “other sharpening methods” I decided to take some pictures of my new Irwin chisels using my metallrugical microscope. I also checked the angle that my Veritas Mk2 gauge put on the chisels as well. In case you aren’t familiar with the Veritas Mk2 gauge (see here for blog entry). It clamps the blade and adjusts both the angle of the main workhead and uses a colored sliding gauge to set the angle. Now I was fairly...

2X4 Winter Contest #1: The beginning

690 days ago by Jamie | 4 comments »

Well, I started working on my 2×4 project today. Last weekend I picked up a bunch of 2×4’s at Lowes to construct a new lumber rack, with 1 to spare for the contest. I was a little afraid that one 2×4 wouldn’t be enough to complete the project, but it looks like I will have a few scraps left. I cut some of the pieces today, 4 – 18” long pieces have been jointed and edge-glued together to form one plank (needed it to be a little longer than what is r...

First Shop #5: Bench, Chisels and First Project

691 days ago by YooperCasey | 3 comments »

Last time I laid out my equipment purchase plans. No progress on purchases though I have decided on the Ridgid TS3650 contractor saw. I see the Woodworking show is coming to Milwaukee in February and that is only 5 hours south for me, so I may see what kind of deal I can snag there on a table saw. I’ve spent the last few evenings working on my core skills. Marking out, cutting, fitting and basically getting used to how certain things behave. This includes trying out my new Bosch CS20...

Pics of my hand-cut dovetails.

715 days ago by itsme_timd | 16 comments »

WARNING! The following pictures may be considered offensive by some, viewer discretion is advised… Here they are, by request, some pics of my first stab (as well as hack, saw, chop and sand) and hand-cutting dovetails. For the record, I did not use any special effects in the photography. What you see is the actual result of me trying to hand cut dovetails with a coping saw, hobby knife, Dremel and dull chisel. The picture quality is poor, that was intentional, the...

First attempt at hand-cut dovetails.

718 days ago by itsme_timd | 24 comments »

Now I see why they have machines to do this… I think I went into this overconfident in my abilities. How hard could it be to cut out a simple notch in a board??? Fairly hard when your attitude exceeds your ability. First, I bought a ‘fancier’ saw than the basic dovetail saw and it just made things worse. Then – when that didn’t work I broke out the coping saw for some nice wavy cuts, I got out the chisel and tore it up real good, and finally… the D...

The Best of 'Wood Art" #4: "Evolution and 'Wood Art' in the Process" --by RusticWoodArt

744 days ago by frank | 3 comments »

Evolution and ‘Wood Art’ in the Process ”Show me an artist, who has not had to hack his own way through the cluttered groundwork of those who came before and I will show you one who does not know yet their beginning to ending.” ....and so I’m taking some time out, to write some more notes and thoughts here, as I sift through those cascading files within my mind, looking for ‘original idea’….for the ”Upcoming Awards Event” Category: Not...

Downtime

751 days ago by Dekker | 0 comments »

Well, I have not had much time to work in the shop this week. My chunky boxes are just waiting for final sanding and finish, but I can’t seem to get the free time at home right now. Maybe this upcoming long weekend, with it being Rememberance day on Monday. But I did manage to swing by the local PrincessAuto yesterday on my way home, and I walked out with a cheap $12 diamond-plate sharpening block (on sale). It has four 2×6 sides, each with a different grit (200, 300, 400, 600)....

Shop Tools #9: Today's Finds - Oct 12 2007

776 days ago by WayneC | 11 comments »

Today I visited a few antique stores in a couple of small towns near Sacramento. I thought I would share what I found. In addition to a few tools I found some woodworking books including a copy of Graham Blackburn’s “Illustrated Encyclopedia of Woodworking Handtools Instruments and Devices”. Without further adieu here are the tools…. A craftsman backsaw, two bronze spokeshaves, and a buck brothers chisel. I belive these are bronze and may be home ma...

Cribbage Board Techniques #2: Finishing the Inlets

785 days ago by Doodler | 1 comment »

Continuing routing the inlets for the cribbage board… After using the fence and clamps to route to the edges of the inlets I finish routing out each segement freehand. I previously scribed the curved segments with a compass and now I carefully cut around the curves with a knife. This is not a common X-Acto which would break immedietly on the ebony, but a hardened steel surgical blade I purchased from Micro-Mark. I use a micro chisel to clean out the edges of the cur...

Shop Tools #6: Today's Finds - June 10 2007

901 days ago by WayneC | 13 comments »

Today was the monthly antique sale here in town. I found a few interesting items today. I’m going to cut to the chase. Here they are. A set of Millers Falls carving tools A pair of Starret Dividers A 1” Chisel for my “Frank’s style greenwood working tool kit”. This is a heavy duty chisel. A pair of R. Bliss Mfg Co. Wooden Screw Clamps. These are for the wall of the shop. They are 16” long and the screws are about 20” long...
