So after the discussion that cajunpen initiated on the WS Vs. “other sharpening methods” I decided to take some pictures of my new Irwin chisels using my metallrugical microscope. I also checked the angle that my Veritas Mk2 gauge put on the chisels as well.

Well, I started working on my 2×4 project today. Last weekend I picked up a bunch of 2×4’s at Lowes to construct a new lumber rack, with 1 to spare for the contest. I was a little afraid that one 2×4 wouldn’t be enough to complete the project, but it looks like I will have a few scraps left.

Last time I laid out my equipment purchase plans. No progress on purchases though I have decided on the Ridgid TS3650 contractor saw. I see the Woodworking show is coming to Milwaukee in February and that is only 5 hours south for me, so I may see what kind of deal I can snag there on a table saw.
I’ve spent the last few evenings working on my core skills. Marking out, cutting, fitting and basically getting used to how certain things behave. This includes trying out my new Bosch CS20...

For the record, I did not use any special effects in the photography. What you see is the actual result of me trying to hand cut dovetails with a coping saw, hobby knife, Dremel and dull chisel.

Now I see why they have machines to do this…
I think I went into this overconfident in my abilities. How hard could it be to cut out a simple notch in a board??? Fairly hard when your attitude exceeds your ability.
First, I bought a ‘fancier’ saw than the basic dovetail saw and it just made things worse. Then – when that didn’t work I broke out the coping saw for some nice wavy cuts, I got out the chisel and tore it up real good, and finally… the D...

Well, I have not had much time to work in the shop this week. My chunky boxes are just waiting for final sanding and finish, but I can’t seem to get the free time at home right now. Maybe this upcoming long weekend, with it being Rememberance day on Monday.
But I did manage to swing by the local PrincessAuto yesterday on my way home, and I walked out with a cheap $12 diamond-plate sharpening block (on sale). It has four 2×6 sides, each with a different grit (200, 300, 400, 600)....

Today I visited a few antique stores in a couple of small towns near Sacramento. I thought I would share what I found. In addition to a few tools I found some woodworking books including a copy of Graham Blackburn’s “Illustrated Encyclopedia of Woodworking Handtools Instruments and Devices”.

Continuing routing the inlets for the cribbage board…
After using the fence and clamps to route to the edges of the inlets I finish routing out each segement freehand.
I previously scribed the curved segments with a compass and now I carefully cut around the curves with a knife. This is not a common X-Acto which would break immedietly on the ebony, but a hardened steel surgical blade I purchased from Micro-Mark.
