Now I see why they have machines to do this… I think I went into this overconfident in my abilities. How hard could it be to cut out a simple notch in a board??? Fairly hard when your attitude exceeds your ability. First, I bought a ‘fancier’ saw than the basic dovetail saw and it just made things worse. A person can spend a lot of time on a carving, but after the final cut with your chisel, you don’t really know what all of the chiseling you’ve done really looks like. You have to choose a finish that will enhance your carving. On some carvings I use a stain, others, just a clear finish, it all depends on the theme, or type of wood you’re using. alright so now everything except for the fence is put together and it is looking awesome. i added the apron and plugged all my holes with birch plugs just for the looks and i put on a coat of poly just to make the birch plugs turn brown because they are end grain so it looks cool, no other reason. i am planning on making the fence and also some form of dust collection and some storage for router bits and a couple other things. maybe even put some French cleats there. so here is a video...
In a recent Blog by Obi, he discussed using a router to cut mortises, and this started up a discussion, in which Don cautioned against getting a Hollow Chisel Mortiser. hey everyone, over the last couple of days i have been able to get a lot done in terms of milling up the lumber and gluing up panels. i chose sycamore for the trash box because it is a hard wood as opposed to the pine that i was going to use before. there was a sale at the lumberyard on sycamore and it was less per bf than a select 1 board of pine. so the purchase made sense. first i got my lumber and let it sit for awhile and then milled it up. the first picture is of a rough board and ...
Well, we got the permit, & finally started building it. The demolishing of the old porch didn’t take too long, because it was so poorly constructed, it was hanging by a thread. They poured the slab over some clay in between the foundation walls, The clay had settled over time, so there was nothing holding up the slab. there were two 16” 2×2s just under the threshold, each with about 5 nails in each. This is a wooden mold for gingerbread. It used to be in many cottages in our cantry. This one belonged to my great-grandmother and could be some hundret of years old. This was one of my very first carvings about threeyears ago.
