First attempt at hand-cut dovetails.

394 days ago by itsme_timd | 24 comments »

Now I see why they have machines to do this… I think I went into this overconfident in my abilities. How hard could it be to cut out a simple notch in a board??? Fairly hard when your attitude exceeds your ability. First, I bought a ‘fancier’ saw than the basic dovetail saw and it just made things worse. Then – when that didn’t work I broke out the coping saw for some nice wavy cuts, I got out the chisel and tore it up real good, and finally… the D...

Carving tips! #1: What a carving looks like before, & after applying the finish!

269 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 23 comments »

A person can spend a lot of time on a carving, but after the final cut with your chisel, you don’t really know what all of the chiseling you’ve done really looks like. You have to choose a finish that will enhance your carving. On some carvings I use a stain, others, just a clear finish, it all depends on the theme, or type of wood you’re using. I’ve chosen some images of my mining scene to show you the difference of before, & after. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~...

192 days ago by teenagewoodworker | 20 comments »

alright so now everything except for the fence is put together and it is looking awesome. i added the apron and plugged all my holes with birch plugs just for the looks and i put on a coat of poly just to make the birch plugs turn brown because they are end grain so it looks cool, no other reason. i am planning on making the fence and also some form of dust collection and some storage for router bits and a couple other things. maybe even put some French cleats there. so here is a video...

Thoughts on the Hollow Chisel Mortising Machine (updated 11-14-2007)

677 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 18 comments »

In a recent Blog by Obi, he discussed using a router to cut mortises, and this started up a discussion, in which Don cautioned against getting a Hollow Chisel Mortiser. I think there are good thoughts on both sides of this debate, and I don’t mean to do anything other than offer some more experience about purchasing and using a Mortiser, and other methods of cutting mortises. As in anything, the more money you spend, the better tool you get. If I were buying just what I wanted, not what ...

Pen Turners' Swap #1: Let the trading begin!

323 days ago by itsme_timd | 17 comments »

A few of us her at LJ that turn pens decided to get together and swap some of goodies. We’ve started a package moving around the country (actually, around North America – we dip into Canada as well!) containing 5 turned pens, 5 pen kits and 5 blanks. Here’s a map to show where we’re located and where our pens will travel: When each Jock gets the package he’ll go through it and decide what he wants to take from it, he can take all or nothing but… what...

Commisions #7: pull out trash box #2

177 days ago by teenagewoodworker | 16 comments »

hey everyone, over the last couple of days i have been able to get a lot done in terms of milling up the lumber and gluing up panels. i chose sycamore for the trash box because it is a hard wood as opposed to the pine that i was going to use before. there was a sale at the lumberyard on sycamore and it was less per bf than a select 1 board of pine. so the purchase made sense. first i got my lumber and let it sit for awhile and then milled it up. the first picture is of a rough board and ...

Building a Deck from my SketchUp plan! #3: Deck in constuction stage!

210 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 16 comments »

Well, we got the permit, & finally started building it. The demolishing of the old porch didn’t take too long, because it was so poorly constructed, it was hanging by a thread. They poured the slab over some clay in between the foundation walls, The clay had settled over time, so there was nothing holding up the slab. there were two 16” 2×2s just under the threshold, each with about 5 nails in each. There was nothing holding up the 6 foot length along the...
