Woodworkers Help Save the Children #3: Ready, Set, GO!

786 days ago by Martin Sojka | 4 comments »

It took some time to finish all the details… but now it’s time to say it loud: We’re ready to go! I’ve prepared dedicated event's page where you can find all of the details (you can also find the link by clicking on the STICKIES in the header). And Debbie has included official event’s announcement in today's eMag issue. As you can see we have moved the deadline to January 1st, 2008 so there is one extra month for everybody who wants to participate. Plus...

Woodworkers Help Save the Children #1: Idea

824 days ago by Martin Sojka | 24 comments »

Our Summer Woodworking Awards Event has come and gone and the Award recipients are already enjoying their well-deserved gifts. With yet another challenge completed, it’s time to start planning our next event and what better time to think of helping others than right now. Not only is the change of seasons heading us towards the time of year that many children look forward to (Christmas) but many children are also being threatened right now, by the effects of natural disasters as well as the...

Rockin' Ride #1: The SketchUp Design

321 days ago by kshipp | 3 comments »

Refers to project posted here. I’ve been designing this for almost eight months now. I planned to complete it before I got deployed in June but I got busy with other things and wasn’t able to really start on it before I left. This allowed me to spend a lot more time thinking about the design and refining it while I was in Iraq. I’m currently home for a short leave so I decided the design is locked in and I’m trying to crank this out in about four days. My niece i...

Woodturning with the Girl Scouts

394 days ago by TravisCorcoran | 9 comments »

A friend of mine is a Girl Scout leader, and her daughter (and my goddaughter) is a member of the pack (troop? quorum?). We’ve been kicking around the idea of doing a little woodturning experience – we’ll let / help each girl turn a candlestick. There are 12 girls, and I’ve got two lathes in my basement. I’d like to borrow a third mini-lathe, and then have three groups of girls, 4 girls each, rotating through a few stations: (1) mark the centers of th...

Plans for Making A Wooden Hoola Hoop for a 7 Year Old Girl - By Rachel DeCou

439 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 33 comments »

This blog entry today is somewhat woodworking related, and the content has mostly been provided by my daughter Rachel, a student of woodworking, at least in the way I do woodworking. She’s been hanging out in the shop all afternoon since the grade school decided to call off school today because the Cottonwood River was up so high, cutting off roads around the County today. I’m enjoying her presence in the shop, but I hope the water is down tomorrow so she can learn something w...

Children and woodworking #2: Mulberry trees, and berries!

523 days ago by Al Navas | 5 comments »

Well, not really woodworking, but there IS wood in them thar trees! From my blog this past weekend: Summers in NW Missouri involve many outdoor activities, including setting aside time to collect berries from blueberry bushes and mulberry trees. Our trees are loaded with berries! And the blueberries should be ready to pick in a few days, if wild animals don’t get to them before we do. This weekend we had wonderful weather, everything is green around us and, for a change, no storms ha...

Kids' Play Center #1: Choosing a Plan

628 days ago by Olaf Gradin | 4 comments »

For my son’s fifth birthday, my wife and I decided to check into an outdoor structure for him to play on. I’ve gone back and forth in my mind about this; I didn’t have one growing up, there are nice parks within a 15 minute drive, and he’s an only child at this point. On the other hand, I would love to build this for my son. There are plenty more pros and cons to weigh, but this story is more about the fact that we have…more or less…decided to build. Th...

Boy in the shop

694 days ago by johnjoiner | 10 comments »

The boy (10 years) and I descended into the shop last night to begin work on his pinewood derby car. With really close supervision I let him cut a straight part of the car on the band saw. But I was really happy that he got excited about using some planes and spokeshaves. On a scrap he tried out my woody smoother, block plane, and old #7. He thought it was very cool to peel the shavings off the board. Then it got even better when he went to town using a spokeshave to smooth the band sa...
