Quarter Size Cherry Quilt Chests #2: Leigh FMT Jig - Part 1

926 days ago by David | 11 comments »

Had a great day today working in the shop. I have gotten behind on my schedule for the cherry quilt chests because of some family isuues and increased work load. Today was a warm and sunny day in Portland and it was a pleasure to get out in the shop and make some cherry sawdust! I thought it would be fun to make a small video to share the experience. The original video was too long so I made a two part episode. I figured you guys would be the only ones that could actually sit and watch a rout...

Apothecary Cabinet/Tea Chest #1: In the Beginning, There was Cherry

747 days ago by Jon3 | 4 comments »

I drink a lot of tea. And I don’t like the bagged stuff, I like fresh tea, carefully brewed. Call me anal. Or picky, or what have you. So I buy a lot of tea from Upton Tea I buy it in these small tins. Now I’ve got a stack of these just sitting on the counter, so I figured something a little more organized…. I picked up the plans for the Apothecary Cabinet from plansnow, and downloaded the PDF. These seem pretty good, and I like the apothecary cabinet design, but t...

Video Journey - Oak Dovetailed Blanket Chest

759 days ago by John Nixon | 13 comments »

I recently finished a dovetailed blanket chest as a wedding gift for my good friend. I think it came out pretty nice. I was able to get it into his house while he was away on his honeymoon. He and his new bride really loved it! It’s a great feeling knowing that they will have this gift and cherish it forever. I made a video about the entire process. Here’s a link to the video. Check it out, and leave a comment telling me what you think:http://www.eaglelakewoodworking.com/post...

Zhuhai and Meixi village #1: In search of the perfect handcut dovetail

896 days ago by chscholz | 9 comments »

So what is it, the ultimate handcut joint? The ultimate joint will require precision, flawless execution and many years of training. Many of us Western woodworkers would probably say the dovetail. Two weeks ago I had the chance to see one of the best executed examples of handcut dovetails I have ever encountered. It was in a side-area of the flower room of the Meixi village museum. Meixi was a small village in the Pearl river delta, today it is a suburb of Zhuhai, essentially the Northern ...

Concave Chest of Drawers #1: Getting Started

272 days ago by Blake | 17 comments »

I started my next project based on an idea I got from a gorgeous piece of maple that I had laying around which I found when I cleaned out my shop recently. The board was an impulse buy several months ago. I didn’t have a use in mind for it when I bought it. It was 6’ long, almost 10” wide and a little over 1/2” thick. This is the design I came up with for a Concave Chest of Drawers: Some of the Features will change as I start building, especially on the struc...

Quarter Size Cherry Quilt Chests #3: Leigh FMT Jig - Part 2

926 days ago by David | 8 comments »

Well, this is the second of the LEIGH FMT Jig videos. Again please excuse the ameteur quality. This is just my way of sharing a fun day in the shop while pushing my digital envelope, so to say. Things have been a bit hectic here so it was good to get some dedicated time in the shop. Many thanks to my wife for allowing this indulgance! I thought a video post would be fun to explore since I have learned so much from my fellow woodworkers via digital imagery. I am not sure what I am going to ...

Happy Fathers Day to all of my LumberJock buddies, and a belated Happy Mothers Day to all of the Lady Jocks! I am looking forward to using the LumberJock CyberToolShare feature to explore everyone’s shop and check out what goodies you all got for Fathers Day! I had the privilege and pleasure of spending the last two days working in my shop. I made a lot of progress on my cherry quilt chests. Quarter Size Cherry Quilt Chests #4: Tom's Domino at Work!

900 days ago by David | 18 comments »

Cherry Chest Update Well I got to squeeze in some time out in the shop and work on the cherry chests that are being built for the Annual Quilt Show in Sisters, Oregon. They will be on display at The Clearwater Gallery. I could not resist the new LumberJock CyberToolShare s feature, so I hopped on the internet late one night and borrowed Tom’s Festool Domino. I used the Domino to assemble the frame and panels into the final box. The Domino was amazingly quick. So quick, that I...

Handmade Portraits #1: Handmade Portraits: Wood Mosaics

426 days ago by weirdwolf | 4 comments »

Robin and Kathy Tucker of woodmosaics stopped working in town back in 1986. After Robin’s intricate wood-inlayed work was featured in The Best of Missouri Hands catalog and commissioned by Ralston Purina, they were on their way to full time crafting. Influenced by Amish quilt patterns, Robin’s excellent woodworking uses exotic natural woods that range from Satinwood from Sri Lanka to Purpleheart from Central and South America. All of the wood is completely natural, with only a cle...
