Quarter Size Cherry Quilt Chests #4: Tom's Domino at Work!

902 days ago by David | 18 comments »

Cherry Chest Update Well I got to squeeze in some time out in the shop and work on the cherry chests that are being built for the Annual Quilt Show in Sisters, Oregon. They will be on display at The Clearwater Gallery. I could not resist the new LumberJock CyberToolShare s feature, so I hopped on the internet late one night and borrowed Tom’s Festool Domino. I used the Domino to assemble the frame and panels into the final box. The Domino was amazingly quick. So quick, that I...

Concave Chest of Drawers #1: Getting Started

274 days ago by Blake | 17 comments »

I started my next project based on an idea I got from a gorgeous piece of maple that I had laying around which I found when I cleaned out my shop recently. The board was an impulse buy several months ago. I didn’t have a use in mind for it when I bought it. It was 6’ long, almost 10” wide and a little over 1/2” thick. This is the design I came up with for a Concave Chest of Drawers: Some of the Features will change as I start building, especially on the struc...

Video Journey - Oak Dovetailed Blanket Chest

761 days ago by John Nixon | 13 comments »

I recently finished a dovetailed blanket chest as a wedding gift for my good friend. I think it came out pretty nice. I was able to get it into his house while he was away on his honeymoon. He and his new bride really loved it! It’s a great feeling knowing that they will have this gift and cherish it forever. I made a video about the entire process. Here’s a link to the video. Check it out, and leave a comment telling me what you think:http://www.eaglelakewoodworking.com/post...

My my...veneering! #3: Veneering woes...disappointed :^(

851 days ago by oscorner | 12 comments »

Well, I completed my journey and this is my story. I decided to use the maple veneer Karson gave me for the border of the chest board. Here is a picture of it taped up from the back: The next task was to completely tape the seams with the three hole tape as seen here: This was a somewhat tedious job because of all the seams. I felt that the mitered corners came out quite well and I was getting excited about finishing the process of gluing it up. I did a test piece with some ...

Happy Fathers Day to all of my LumberJock buddies, and a belated Happy Mothers Day to all of the Lady Jocks! I am looking forward to using the LumberJock CyberToolShare feature to explore everyone’s shop and check out what goodies you all got for Fathers Day! I had the privilege and pleasure of spending the last two days working in my shop. I made a lot of progress on my cherry quilt chests. I am under a time crunch as these need to be delivered at the end of the month, so it was great...

Quarter Size Cherry Quilt Chests #2: Leigh FMT Jig - Part 1

928 days ago by David | 11 comments »

Had a great day today working in the shop. I have gotten behind on my schedule for the cherry quilt chests because of some family isuues and increased work load. Today was a warm and sunny day in Portland and it was a pleasure to get out in the shop and make some cherry sawdust! I thought it would be fun to make a small video to share the experience. The original video was too long so I made a two part episode. I figured you guys would be the only ones that could actually sit and watch a rout...

building a tool chest #2: disaster and discouragement

551 days ago by bryano | 9 comments »

while doing a dry fit to take measurements for drawers and drawer guides disaster struck. After the measurements were taken and I was in the process of disasembling the chest I lost control of some of the parts. the back of the chest fell to its death and broke in two at the tounge and grove joint. this has stopped the next step of the project in its tracks. Now I must fix this problem before I continue. the next intery will be called the reasurection. Heers some pics.

Zhuhai and Meixi village #1: In search of the perfect handcut dovetail

898 days ago by chscholz | 9 comments »

So what is it, the ultimate handcut joint? The ultimate joint will require precision, flawless execution and many years of training. Many of us Western woodworkers would probably say the dovetail. Two weeks ago I had the chance to see one of the best executed examples of handcut dovetails I have ever encountered. It was in a side-area of the flower room of the Meixi village museum. Meixi was a small village in the Pearl river delta, today it is a suburb of Zhuhai, essentially the Northern ...

This is taken from a design from Woodsmith #32. You can see a finished version finished by strube1369 A couple key differences that I am going to be doing different. I will be mitering the corners of the box, and using dovetail keys of the contrasting wood(it is not shown in the design). I also pla...
