After several e-mails requesting the plans for the Dan Walters cutting board I copied I decided to put some information together to get people started.
The first thing to decide is what size of board you want as this will dictate the stock you need. Or the stock you have will dictate what size cutting board you can make.
Stock selection: you need to have a good contrast between the different woods used. The wood selected should also be hard woods, but not necessarily too hard. OAK, ...

This bridge fell during a tropical storm a few years ago. Now it servers as a dam, and the river flows over it rather than under. Today cars do not use the bridge to travel the forest road, but that doesn’t stop a few adventurous hikers.

I’m posting these pictures as a means to get bloggin’…and, because I’m interested in milling and drying lumber (on a scale that I can accommodate – in the backyard). I’m also brand new at it, so it’s just fun to share! I would have liked to have photos or video of this ‘small time’ sawing in the backyard, but wasn’t quite there yet!
Inspired by Bob’s forum topic post the other day on the craigslist cherry crotchwood, I took some pics of some crotchwood I cut in April…
A couple p...

Had a great day today working in the shop. I have gotten behind on my schedule for the cherry quilt chests because of some family isuues and increased work load. Today was a warm and sunny day in Portland and it was a pleasure to get out in the shop and make some cherry sawdust! I thought it would be fun to make a small video to share the experience. The original video was too long so I made a two part episode. I figured you guys would be the only ones that could actually sit and watch a rout...

A Six-Tube Scroll Saw Blade Holder
This was a quick and fun shop project. The material came from a small 2/4 board of gum cherry that was left over from another project. It took care to wrap the grain with respect to the sides and back. I almost missed this and had a “T-Chisel” event which caused me to re-do part of the project. Well, actually I had no choice, as I know the recipient has a critical eye!
This is a six-tube scroll saw blade holder designed for a woodworker tha...

A lot of LJs, after seeing my work, asked for a video demonstration of how to make a natural edge goblet. I posted on YouTube two videos (part 1 and 2). As it turns out, dealing with talking and camera while turning leads to loss of concentration. I managed to destroy the natural edge but I did get a goblet and you can see how I made it.
Sorry for he slightly rough editing and not so perfect camera work (my father is still learning the craft).

I drink a lot of tea. And I don’t like the bagged stuff, I like fresh tea, carefully brewed. Call me anal. Or picky, or what have you. So I buy a lot of tea from Upton Tea I buy it in these small tins. Now I’ve got a stack of these just sitting on the counter, so I figured something a little more organized….
I picked up the plans for the Apothecary Cabinet from plansnow, and downloaded the PDF. These seem pretty good, and I like the apothecary cabinet design, but t...

As of my last blog entry, I had received the hardware from Gramercy Tools, and I’m very satisfied with the quality of materials and service. The shorter blade necessitated a shorter stretcher, which I whipped out in a couple of hours from a scrap piece of cherry. Like many of my shop projects, the finished saw looks different from what I had visualized at the start of the project.
The pins that catch the blade simply epoxy into the handles, which are pre-drilled to the proper d...

Well, I was asked to put together a blog on how I made my segmentd ring. Since I had to make a new one for myself, (first one too small) I thought I would go ahead and do a step by step picture tutorial. My first time ever doing something like this , so hope it comes out OK.
Here goes;
Wood Selection
The first step in making the ring is deciding what woods to use. As we all know, the selection is quite large. One of the most important things is color, but the most important is hardne...
