After several e-mails requesting the plans for the Dan Walters cutting board I copied I decided to put some information together to get people started.
The first thing to decide is what size of board you want as this will dictate the stock you need. Or the stock you have will dictate what size cutting board you can make.

The quick and dirty instructions on how to make a zig-zag pattern cutting board.

Choose a couple different types of hardwood. The more colors the better. Below is cherry, maple and walnut. Rip strips of wood any width so the total with is about 12”. One of my favorite features of the top, is actually technically a defect—a quarter-sized knot hole. While both my wife and I agreed that it added “character” to the top, I couldn’t simply leave it as it was; it was large enough to swallow up small objects whole and naturally not very stable.

I have a few sanding blocks, but this one gets the most use. Design is a take off of a Wood Magazine article. The pictures are telling as to the construction. The only hidden detail is there is a plugged hole under the felt. It is for the screw that is epoxied to the bottom that attaches to the wingnut. I chose hardwood scraps that I had on hand. May 14, 2008 ~ Happy Birthday Samantha
This is one of my favorite days of the year; the day my grandaughter Samantha was born. It seems like yesterday but it was really 10 years ago. Of course the other favorite day is Emily’s B-day and she is 3. So I digress but thought today would be a good time to finally put together this sequence on these Cherry End Tables.

Two days before Christmas, my wife casually mentions that she would like a jewelry box. Hmmm, don’t think the timing was very good. Having completed the 2×4 project, I decided to try to put together a jewelry box from the small pieces of wood laying around in my shop. I had a decent amount of 1/2” cherry, some figured maple, some oak, and a small amount of paduk. My wife was starting to get ready for some Christmas decorations. She notified me that she’d like a Sofa table to place against the wall in the kitchen to put decorations on. She also stated a requirement that it be like the Thorsen table that was built by my son Dave. for the Thorsen Table Challenge that we had earlier here on LumberJocks.com . This bridge fell during a tropical storm a few years ago. Now it servers as a dam, and the river flows over it rather than under. Today cars do not use the bridge to travel the forest road, but that doesn’t stop a few adventurous hikers.
