After several e-mails requesting the plans for the Dan Walters cutting board I copied I decided to put some information together to get people started.
The first thing to decide is what size of board you want as this will dictate the stock you need. Or the stock you have will dictate what size cutting board you can make.
Stock selection: you need to have a good contrast between the different woods used. The wood selected should also be hard woods, but not necessarily too hard. OAK, ...

The quick and dirty instructions on how to make a zig-zag pattern cutting board.
Click on the pictures to see a full size image.
Choose a couple different types of hardwood. The more colors the better. Below is cherry, maple and walnut. Rip strips of wood any width so the total with is about 12”. This is the width that will fit through my planer. The beauty of this is that none of the widths have to be the same. The board shown below is made of scrape wood. If you only have shor...

One of my favorite features of the top, is actually technically a defect—a quarter-sized knot hole. While both my wife and I agreed that it added “character” to the top, I couldn’t simply leave it as it was; it was large enough to swallow up small objects whole and naturally not very stable.
After some searching, I found a few references to folks filling holes like this using “Pour on” epoxy, of the type you might use to encase small chatchkis in a bar t...

I have a few sanding blocks, but this one gets the most use. Design is a take off of a Wood Magazine article. The pictures are telling as to the construction. The only hidden detail is there is a plugged hole under the felt. It is for the screw that is epoxied to the bottom that attaches to the wingnut. I chose hardwood scraps that I had on hand. They consist of cherry and two different walnut species. The felt was a self adhesive scrap left over from a jewelry box project. It measure...

! I took some pictures to “document” my adventure of building these clocks by hand. It is by no means a complete record of the construction process but hey – its my first attempt.
First, some nice boards from my stash on the bench.
Laying out true and false bottoms and tops
Ripping with a saw over 100 years old but it still works great (after being sharpend of course ;-)
Crosscutting…(too lazy to pick up the other saw…)
Parts are r...

May 14, 2008 ~ Happy Birthday Samantha
This is one of my favorite days of the year; the day my grandaughter Samantha was born. It seems like yesterday but it was really 10 years ago. Of course the other favorite day is Emily’s B-day and she is 3. So I digress but thought today would be a good time to finally put together this sequence on these Cherry End Tables.
Our Daughter wanted me to make her two end tables out of Cherry and liked the design of two that I made from oak...

Two days before Christmas, my wife casually mentions that she would like a jewelry box. Hmmm, don’t think the timing was very good. Having completed the 2×4 project, I decided to try to put together a jewelry box from the small pieces of wood laying around in my shop. I had a decent amount of 1/2” cherry, some figured maple, some oak, and a small amount of paduk. After spending a few days laying out a design and seeing if I had enough wood, I started cutting and gluing.Th...

My wife was starting to get ready for some Christmas decorations. She notified me that she’d like a Sofa table to place against the wall in the kitchen to put decorations on. She also stated a requirement that it be like the Thorsen table that was built by my son Dave. for the Thorsen Table Challenge that we had earlier here on LumberJocks.com . His table has aged some since Dave made it and it now sits in the kitchen where my wife puts her purse when she comes into the house.
It’s wh...

This bridge fell during a tropical storm a few years ago. Now it servers as a dam, and the river flows over it rather than under. Today cars do not use the bridge to travel the forest road, but that doesn’t stop a few adventurous hikers.

Happy New Year to all my Lumberjock Buddies!
I just reviewed the latest issue of Fine Woodworking online and saw one of our newest Lumberjocks has published an article. Congratulations to T-Chisel for getting his article on his Classic Step Stool published! You can also see a companion article where Tommy discusses his finishing process for this project.
The Classic Step Stool was a Rough Cutter Forum project, one of three to date, that were built as a cooperative project via a ground-b...
