I just completed the cherry display shelves being built for some close friends in Central Oregon. This shelf will be used to display works of art in thier gallery. The display shelf is built from steamed cherry and cherry plywood with pocket screw construction. Dimensions are 18 inches square and 5 feet tall. The finish is 4 coats of hand rubbed tung oil and 2 coats of wax.

Well, this is the second of the LEIGH FMT Jig videos. Again please excuse the ameteur quality. This is just my way of sharing a fun day in the shop while pushing my digital envelope, so to say. Things have been a bit hectic here so it was good to get some dedicated time in the shop. Many thanks to my wife for allowing this indulgance!

Had a great day today working in the shop. I have gotten behind on my schedule for the cherry quilt chests because of some family isuues and increased work load. Today was a warm and sunny day in Portland and it was a pleasure to get out in the shop and make some cherry sawdust! I thought it would be fun to make a small video to share the experience. I thought I would share the progess of a couple of cherry display shelves being built for some close friends in Central Oregon. This will be used to display works of art in thier gallery. I am using steamed cherry and pocket screw construction. This a follow up from a previous post on using the Kreg Pocket Hole Jig system. I am taking a break from work and the shop spending Mothers Day weekend in Sisters, Oregon. Final sanding and finish await me at home.

So there I was last night. Down in the shop putting the finishing touches on a piece of cherry that would become a part of the desk I’ve been making for my daughter Madison. The pieces are all cut and dimensioned so now I’m just using my smoothing planes to put that sheen on the face that only a sharp blade can achieve. Apart from reading just about every magazine that hit the newsstands since we bought our house several years back, I’m basically a self-taught woodworker. I’ve only taken two classes. One a 5-week lathe class (spindle turning), the other a ten-week intro class – where I designed and built my pub table. (The first project I posted here). First the bad news, just after my Bro-in law rec’d his homemade 6-in-1 mahogany screwdriver for christmas (and my nephew asked if he was really going to use it) it broke. Apparently the fact that I made it was a miracle, as I misjudged and left the wall closest to the business end very thin. First attempt was only a success in working out all the details in getting it on the lathe, and then off in one piece. Another second and It would have exploded on me.
