Quarter Size Cherry Quilt Chests #3: Leigh FMT Jig - Part 2

927 days ago by David | 8 comments »

Well, this is the second of the LEIGH FMT Jig videos. Again please excuse the ameteur quality. This is just my way of sharing a fun day in the shop while pushing my digital envelope, so to say. Things have been a bit hectic here so it was good to get some dedicated time in the shop. Many thanks to my wife for allowing this indulgance! I thought a video post would be fun to explore since I have learned so much from my fellow woodworkers via digital imagery. I am not sure what I am going to ...

Quarter Size Cherry Quilt Chests #2: Leigh FMT Jig - Part 1

927 days ago by David | 11 comments »

Had a great day today working in the shop. I have gotten behind on my schedule for the cherry quilt chests because of some family isuues and increased work load. Today was a warm and sunny day in Portland and it was a pleasure to get out in the shop and make some cherry sawdust! I thought it would be fun to make a small video to share the experience. The original video was too long so I made a two part episode. I figured you guys would be the only ones that could actually sit and watch a rout...

Hand Plane catastrophe...or almost nearly a catastrophe!!!

957 days ago by Matt | 17 comments »

So there I was last night. Down in the shop putting the finishing touches on a piece of cherry that would become a part of the desk I’ve been making for my daughter Madison. The pieces are all cut and dimensioned so now I’m just using my smoothing planes to put that sheen on the face that only a sharp blade can achieve. I have nothing against sanding, but I promised myself a long time ago to keep on practicing when and where I can with the hand planes. I’ve come a long w...

screwdriver #2: replacement

969 days ago by scottb | 21 comments »

Dear Sir, We are very sorry to hear that our first generation custom made six-in-one screwdriver did not live up to your screw driving expectations of being able to drive nearly as many screws as the Titanic made Trans-Atlantic voyages. We take our product design and customer service very seriously, and have sacked everyone involved with the first product line. At considerable time and expense we have completely retooled our product line and would like to offer you a replacement fro...

back to the box #1: little cherry box

992 days ago by scottb | 27 comments »

Apart from reading just about every magazine that hit the newsstands since we bought our house several years back, I’m basically a self-taught woodworker. I’ve only taken two classes. One a 5-week lathe class (spindle turning), the other a ten-week intro class – where I designed and built my pub table. (The first project I posted here). I finished those classes a little over a year ago, and my wife and I agreed that I could continue to take classes as time and budget allowed. Consequently, I ...

screwdriver #1: Admit it, fix it, and move on... (now with pix!)

1000 days ago by scottb | 29 comments »

First the bad news, just after my Bro-in law rec’d his homemade 6-in-1 mahogany screwdriver for christmas (and my nephew asked if he was really going to use it) it broke. Apparently the fact that I made it was a miracle, as I misjudged and left the wall closest to the business end very thin. First attempt was only a success in working out all the details in getting it on the lathe, and then off in one piece. Another second and It would have exploded on me. Like any good customer ...
