How to find and harvest legal burls!

44 days ago by OregonBurls | 32 comments »

Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also. I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know. It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....

Making A Segmented Ring Without A Lathe / A Step by Step Tutorial

172 days ago by scrappy | 29 comments »

Well, I was asked to put together a blog on how I made my segmentd ring. Since I had to make a new one for myself, (first one too small) I thought I would go ahead and do a step by step picture tutorial. My first time ever doing something like this , so hope it comes out OK. Here goes; Wood Selection The first step in making the ring is deciding what woods to use. As we all know, the selection is quite large. One of the most important things is color, but the most important is hardne...

A Bookcase Entry

610 days ago by Al Navas | 29 comments »

Here we go, folks – this time for real. Someone must be first, and I volunteer. This is a barrister bookcase of my own design. I created it in eCabinet Systems, the program I use to design and create furniture pieces. Dimensions are: 60”H x 36”W x 14”D This could be built in modules, but I elected to do the bookcase as one piece. The model can be easily modified, now that the entire bookcase is designed. I also attach an exploded view, to pique your interest ...

screwdriver #1: Admit it, fix it, and move on... (now with pix!)

999 days ago by scottb | 29 comments »

First the bad news, just after my Bro-in law rec’d his homemade 6-in-1 mahogany screwdriver for christmas (and my nephew asked if he was really going to use it) it broke. Apparently the fact that I made it was a miracle, as I misjudged and left the wall closest to the business end very thin. First attempt was only a success in working out all the details in getting it on the lathe, and then off in one piece. Another second and It would have exploded on me. Like any good customer ...

"REVERIE HARP!" a new style of Harp from a kit #1: Reverie Harp Kit, Off to a pretty good start!

161 days ago by Dick, & Barb Cain | 27 comments »

I showed Barb this kit the other day, & immediately she said, ”I want one.” When the Sweetie wants something, I usually comply to her wishes. Besides, I can try making something I’ve never done before. This is the kit I ordered, it's called a Reverie Harp.. One thing about this Harp is, anyone can play it because of the way it’s tuned. It has a real soothing sound.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is a picture of the parts ...

back to the box #1: little cherry box

991 days ago by scottb | 27 comments »

Apart from reading just about every magazine that hit the newsstands since we bought our house several years back, I’m basically a self-taught woodworker. I’ve only taken two classes. One a 5-week lathe class (spindle turning), the other a ten-week intro class – where I designed and built my pub table. (The first project I posted here). I finished those classes a little over a year ago, and my wife and I agreed that I could continue to take classes as time and budget allowed. Consequently, I ...

New arrival at the house A burl

686 days ago by Karson | 24 comments »

I got home taday at lunch time and I saw this in the middle of the driveway. It’s a cherry burl, probably 3’ long and 2’ wide at the widest spot. Not sure how I’ll cut it up yet. More pictures. And Sunny checking it out for critters. It looks like its been on the ground for a while because of the aging on the cut ends.

Karma brought me LOTS of FREE wood today!

401 days ago by oldskoolmodder | 22 comments »

I was out at my local exotic wood store that I’ve shopped at for the last 25 years, and picked up a few nice things, as well as some wood too. I was kind of wondering how I let myself spend $87 (total) on Purple Heart, (1×11 1/4×17), 1/8” x 2 1/2” x 36” (2pcs), 1” x 2” x 30” Cordia/Bocote & 1/4” x 4” x 24” Mexican Chechen, plus brad tip bits and nice adjustable countersink bits plus a bunch of misc stuff. When I went...

Drunken Cutting Boards #1: Drunken Alice in Wonderland Cutting Board

78 days ago by poroskywood | 21 comments »

Hey everybody, after a few personal messages here is my version of a how to on a Drunken Checker Board. I of coarse bow to the Chairman of the Board and pay tribute with beer. This is a Off-Checker pattern I call “Drunken Alice in Wonderland” The “serendipitous” nature of this piece is appealing in a far out sort of way. Here Goes… So first I prepare the Material. I am using Hard Maple and Walnut both are surfaced flat and cut 1” x 9” x 14&...
