DIY Lathe #1: Introduction

235 days ago by Marcel T | 9 comments »

Hello fellow Lumber Jocks! I’m starting a little blog series on my work-in-progress DIY lathe. In short, I want to build a lathe to turn a few pens, without spending ~$60 some on specifically pen turning materials and ~$200 on a lathe. So, I want to try turning. I’ve always considered myself a handyman-esque person, and I had that urge to build! The tipping point was when I found a few blogs such as AfriGadget, StreetUse and Future Perfect. Their owners travel a lot, and they notice ingenu...

DIY Lathe #2: The better base!

228 days ago by Marcel T | 2 comments »

Hey guys! Taking advantage of the long weekend here in Canada, (so this was last weekend) I made a better base for my dremel. I was taking it apart to see why it was squeaking (trapped sawdust) when the idea hit me – drill the existing screw holes all the way through the body, and get a longer screw to hold the dremel together (like the old screws) and hold the dremel to the base. Well, I didn’t have a screw quite that long and thin, but I did have some short screws of the correct diameter. S...

WORKBENCH ON A BUDGET

511 days ago by Buckskin | 6 comments »

The other day I got frustrated with an old stainless steel table I was using as a work bench. So, I decided it was time for a change and I needed to do it cheaply. I did some looking around and decided to adapt these two plans: http://www.hammerzone.com/archives/workshop/bench/below20.html http://www.shopsmithhandson.com/archives/july_aug_03/html/weekend_project.htm My HTML ability is lacking so maybe somebody can help me out with a couple hot links in the comments. I used the f...

About Me--alanealane

I just edited my profile and added the following description of myself…as if anyone cares who I am anyway…sob sob. LOL I’m Alex, a 20 year old woodworking fanatic who’s affectionately called by my family the ‘Termite.’ I work at a private liberal-arts institution in my hometown as an Architectural Drafter/Designer. Another fanaticism I hold dear is that of Jazz Music. I was raised listening to the likes of David Sanborn, Tony Bennett, Stevie Wonder, Al J...

I need help, I know in more ways than one

392 days ago by jockmike2 | 19 comments »

My 16 in variable speed wood lathe model number( 46-745, 46-746, and 46-765x ) has a broken inverter Part # 1 I’ve called the Delta Manufacturing Plant in Tenn. and they said they discontinued production of all parts on this model a couple years ago. I have bought a new (supposed) one from a company in Lansing but it was no good. When I had an electrician hook it up and it did’nt work he said, must be the motor is bad. So I took the motor to Lansing Electric, a reputable organizat...

Ideas from my shop #1: Lap Clamps

281 days ago by David | 5 comments »

April 1, 2008 No this isn’t an April fool joke. I thought since the price of everything is getting so high, you’d enjoy seeing these clamps. I worked in a boat shop one summer and the standing joke was ”let’s sell all of these clamps and buy one of them thar plactic boats”. We had buckets full of clamps. You need lots when planking. These are what we called “Lap” clamps. We used them when putting planks on a lap strake boat. They won’t...
