Shaker Bench for Charity 2011 #3: Shaker Bench Completed In Time (Just Barely!)

1263 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 20 comments »

Whew! That was a close one! Brian Havens and I worked on the Shaker Bench for Charity right up to the last minute. The social mixer and appetizers started at 6:00p.m. This was when the items went on view for both the silent and live auction. I was spraying the final coat of lacquer on the drawers at 5:50p.m. while Brian showered and changed. Then I showered and changed while Brian and my wife Rita loaded the bench in the vehicle. By the time I got dressed, the bench was al...

Shaker Bench for Charity 2011 #2: The Deadline Draws Near...

1265 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 14 comments »

Yikes! We are cutting this one close. The Shaker Bench for Charity is being constructed out of black walnut and it is gorgeous. But the drawback is that black walnut simply takes a bit longer to process than the cherry which all previous benches have been made of. When you multiply the extended processing time by several pieces it all starts adding up. Newspaper Coverage The Billings Gazette stopped out and took some photos and gave the story of our woodworking marathon for charity ...

Shaker Bench for Charity 2011 #1: Neck Deep in Woodworking...

1266 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 11 comments »

Shop Update- Fellow LJ member Brian Havens flew out from his home in California Tuesday night to help me build a Shaker Bench for Charity. I think he may have questioned this decision as he arrived here in Billings at 11pm and the temperature was -3°. SNAP! Immediately upon arriving to my place we went straight into the shop. The next couple of hours were spent talking about our shops and the differences. It was only after our voices were getting hoarse and eyes blurry from fatigue did we ...

Dancing Clock Fundraiser Update

1502 days ago by OttoH | 1 comment »

Well, I have been away for the computer for the last three days, we held a fundraiser in the small town of Marble Falls Texas, which has a population of around 5,000 for an employee that has been battling lung cancer and away from work for the past eight months. I built the Dancing Clock for the silent auction and there were many other donations from the community as well. The employee’s younger brother was the high bidder on the clock and he gave it to his brother. To date we have raised ...

Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure: Items to Build for Fundraiser #1: What items to build for fundraising auction?

1527 days ago by Jonathan | 13 comments »

My wife will be traveling out to San Diego in the middle of November to participate in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure walk. In order to be an entrant, she has to raise several thousand dollars through donations. One of her coworkers is planning a fundraising event to be held at a local restaurant sometime next month. There will be an auction at the event, with all the proceeds going directly to the walkathon. I would like to build a few things that can be auctioned-off to help ra...

1595 days ago by thewoodwhisperer | 10 comments »

After 30 days of intense building, Wood Whisperer Guild members have finally finished their tables. 67 people participated and thanks to 158 contributors and numerous sponsors, we managed to donate over $8000 to the American Cancer Society! I would like to thank everyone who donated and participated. And of course I would like to thank Duane Moore, the man who this whole event is dedicated to. I hope you will all join me in wishing Duane the best of luck. If you still want to dona...

Woodworking For A Good Cause

1676 days ago by Todd A. Clippinger | 18 comments »

My wife, Rita, manages a daily program that keeps adults with developmental disabilities busy. She works personally with these individuals and we see first hand how this program enriches the lives of the participants and their families. Most of them are affected by down syndrome. We choose to support this program every year with donations for the fundraising auction. This year I donated the red bamboo sofa table. This was originally made with the intention of it being a donation. ...

Spindles #1: Each day brings new delights

1764 days ago by Lisa Chan | 3 comments »

I’m glad that my last rainy day terror didn’t dissuade me from my efforts. Thanks everyone for the upbeat words and encouragement… it actually made a big difference when I got out there again. This weekend I went to Rockler and saw this great deal on Bocote turning blanks. Picked up three 1×1x12 for $1/pc. BTW… has anyone else noticed that Bocote smells like pickles when worked?! WEIRD! After turning two spindles, I decided that I was absolutely in love with th...
