For your consideration is my bookcase design entry.
Before I approach this contest, I had to think about what the core of the the contest is about. I had to understand what the result should be and then put my spin on it. Chances are, it would have to have to be a unique spin on an ancient piece of furniture that is universally appealing. This has to be photogenic to compete with the other wood working magazine, and yet has a calling to the Popular woodworkers.

This bookcase had to be designed for a Church, and be movable. It also had to fit comfortably against the back of pews when been stored.I used European white oak which i quarter sawed myself,the shelves sit 90 degrees to the face edge.I made hold down blocks for the top, any screws used were solid brass SH and facing to heaven!The bookcase is movable on castors.Coated with sanding sealer and finished with about 8 – 10 coats of clear wax.

The following is my entry into the bookcase design contest.
Several weeks ago a potential client approached me with an unusual problem. She wanted a bookcase for her new condo. Not unusual except that it needed to be wall mounted, could have NO back, and needed to match the color of her current cabinents. That’s correct, wall mounted with no backing, an open bookcase. The timing on this challenge was interesting because I was in the process of doing a remodeling job for my wife. We have a small “upstairs” area build over the garage and she wanted to turn what had been a bedroom into a library.
The “library” had what was a long narrow closet. We removed the doors and are in the process of building a bookcase in the 28 inch deep ten foot long area making it into a storage place for all her books.

I call this the cricket shelf because it kind of reminds me of a cricket. The lights on top look like the antenna and so forth. At any rate I was trying to create a shelving system that didn’t require any hardware or standards to support the shelves. The idea here is that friction alone will support the shelf and its contents.

I designed this simple proof of concept project for my house. My ultimate goal, (when I get the time, money, and tools) is to replace this:

This bookcase I build for each of my kids when they went to college. The first one about 10 years ago. The purpose was to have something that will be flexible in space, easy to move from place to place and sturdy enough to hold books, stereo or a TV, and to last a few years. This is a shelf I finished last month for my sister. The size accommodates a corner beside the patio door. I left the back and sides open for showing off her fancy scrapbooks. I screwed it to the wall through the top rail.
It is all 3/4” solid mahogany from the home center. The shelves sit on adjustable pins. A 1” piece wraps three sides to give heft and cover the endgrain. I used glue at the front with splines at the rear for seasonal movement.

Building the lighting section was a little more challenging. I used a 2¼” stock crown molding to trim out the area where the fluorescent light would be. I needed a ledge on which the lighting panel could set, so I routed a narrow piece of oak using the rail bit and cut off the “lip” and glued it into a dado I cut into the back of the crown molding.
I also cut a dado into the main carcass and inserted a “lip” into it as well.
