Corner Bookshelf

263 days ago by Chips | 7 comments »

When I read about challenge 04 in Popular Woodworking Newsletter my first thought was to give it a try. The next thought was to design something that didn’t look like a box. Then I remembered that I had turned a square book case 45 degrees and put it into a corner. From there I took inspiration from other project I have built. A Corner Pantry Cabinet I built for my daughter and a reproduction of a 200 year old spice box that I built for my wife. When you add to that my enjoyment of carving...

Bookcase Challenge

286 days ago by CanadianWoodChuck | 9 comments »

Hi All I just finished playing with my Sketchup drawing for the bookcase challenge. I’m really enjoying using sketchup for my conceptual drawings. I’m so glad that LJ comes up with these ideas, it gives me a great chance to play in Sketchup. If I was to build this bookcase I would love to use Oak veneer core plywood for the carcus, oak trim where required and a contrasting wood like padauk for the face frames. This huge bookcase would cover an area of approximately 5̵...

Challenge04 Bookcase #1: Modern Style Dovetail Bookcase

263 days ago by kshipp | 3 comments »

Here is my entry for the bookcase challenge. Actually, maybe I should call it “how I forced myself to learn Sketchup the right way.” I had dabbled in Sketchup before but I never made drawings of different components that I then assembled. I spend a lot of time for this challenge watching the tutorials on YouTube and reading about proper Sketchup techniques online. I have worked with many 3D modeling programs before and some of the concepts are the same but there is certainly a le...

Bookcase for the Challange

269 days ago by GaryK | 21 comments »

Well, here is my entry for the bookcase challenge. It’s meant to be constructed using standard frame and panel construction using solid wood, exceptfor the back which would be plywood. I have never seen a bookcase on wheels before, so that dictated the smaller size. Too heavy and itwouldn’t roll very easily on carpet. The advantages to a bookcase on wheels is the ability to move itfrom room to room or around the room without having to empty it. The reason for it opening ...

General Topics #7: Bookcase to Compliment my MCAD Project

262 days ago by Jeff | 7 comments »

I almost forgot to post this! I was working on the blog for the MCAD Continuing Studies class (the project driving the design for this bookcase). I will come back and edit the entry with the rationale behind the design. Front Doors Open SketchUp Model File. Commentary and additional images were added as a separate post below.

Bookcase Challenge redux

286 days ago by Cdinde | 5 comments »

Alright—newbie status is showing here. Since yesterday’s post incorporated a couple of photo links in a format incompatible with this forum, here goes try number 2 (now that I’ve found the directions on how to link them—yes, I’m a guy and I don’t apologize for it). The photo above shows one of the more complicated bookcase-style projects I’ve done – but it doesn’t meet the criteria of this challenge, whereas …. Photo 2R...

Fudge a Little Here, Bump a Little There

263 days ago by FloridaNoCypress | 12 comments »

For some two years, I carried a rough outline of a case for my wife’s piano books in the back of my mind. Having been scared away by AutoCad’s threat to my credit card balance, and then frustrated with TurboCad’s coming-through-the-back-door work method, I decided to bite the bullet and try Sketchup. Otherwise, I’m back to my old CrayolaCAD. Well, Sketchup was a little tricky at first, but I managed to fudge a little here and bump a little there, and finally with one cathartic brain fart, ...

Bookcase for Kids

280 days ago by DODEngineer | 7 comments »

I saw the posting on the Popular Woodworking blog and figured I would throw my lot in. This is a bookcase I built for my son and I liked it so much I built a second for my daughter. It is only 4’ tall and 28” wide but it is 14” deep to accommodate larger children’s books as well as any stray toys (mostly toys in my daughter’s case). I also used this as an experiment to see what would be involved in building something without plywood. It is standard frame and panel construction and i...

Le Petite Bookcase

272 days ago by BertJ | 4 comments »

I designed this bookcase using the Golden Mean ratio. The narrowest part of the side frames (where the middle shelf is located) is 0.6 the height of the bookcase. http://www.shininghorizonschool.org-a.googlepages.com/orientalbookcase The dyed maple frames are doweled except for the top of the center stile, which has two pocket screws. (The center stile and lower front stretcher are not the same thickness as the other frame parts, giving the project a nice shadow line.) The frames are...

PWW bookcase challenge ...

287 days ago by Cdinde | 5 comments »

I’ve built several different bookcase styles over the years. The largest project of this type included a wall of display shelves, cabinets, a fireplace mantle and fireplace surround (photo 1). But PWW’s challenge is for “a simple bookcase design”. Well, I did three matching bookcases in 1974 that were quick projects. Those bookcases are still going strong and remain in full, unabashed, use even though the home they are in now is far nicer than the upper flat we wer...
