Slide Together & Apart Bookcase
This bookcase was completed in early February, 2008 and accomplished a number of objectives:
1. I finally put to use some oak boards that I brought to Connecticut from Minnesota 30 years ago.2. I was able to reuse some boards taken out of a stereo cabinet that I had modified.3. I verified Jerry Work’s claims concerning the Festool dovetail bits (They don’t need to have a rabbet cut before going into wood at full depth).4. I created ...

Here is my entry for the bookcase challenge. Actually, maybe I should call it “how I forced myself to learn Sketchup the right way.” I had dabbled in Sketchup before but I never made drawings of different components that I then assembled. I spend a lot of time for this challenge watching the tutorials on YouTube and reading about proper Sketchup techniques online. I have worked with many 3D modeling programs before and some of the concepts are the same but there is certainly a le...

Bookcase Challenge04 ( revised pics )
When I first heard of this contest I simply thought, hmmm, bookcases, another contest, another bookcase. And that was basically the end of it, I didn’t rush out to my drafting table and start scribbling, nor did I give it much thought. Another book shelf I thought, why try to re-invent the wheel right.?Ahhh, but as it goes, that very night I lie in bed awake, staring up at the ceiling with only one thing on my mind….a book case? So, the foll...

I almost forgot to post this! I was working on the blog for the MCAD Continuing Studies class (the project driving the design for this bookcase). I will come back and edit the entry with the rationale behind the design.

I learned about the LumberJocks/Popular Woodworking bookcase design challenge through The Wood Whisperer website just as I was finishing drawing this bookcase plan. It was designed to be the first library space for my best friend’s baby, who is expected in mid-June. For that project, I will likely use rosewood solids and black walnut sheet goods (for contrast and cost benefits). This design, however, is for walnut solids and hard/rock maple sheet goods. In terms of design, the bookcase is...

Hi All
I just finished playing with my Sketchup drawing for the bookcase challenge. I’m really enjoying using sketchup for my conceptual drawings. I’m so glad that LJ comes up with these ideas, it gives me a great chance to play in Sketchup.
If I was to build this bookcase I would love to use Oak veneer core plywood for the carcus, oak trim where required and a contrasting wood like padauk for the face frames.
This huge bookcase would cover an area of approximately 5̵...

Well, here is my entry for the bookcase challenge.
It’s meant to be constructed using standard frame and panel construction using solid wood, exceptfor the back which would be plywood.
I have never seen a bookcase on wheels before, so that dictated the smaller size. Too heavy and itwouldn’t roll very easily on carpet. The advantages to a bookcase on wheels is the ability to move itfrom room to room or around the room without having to empty it.
The reason for it opening ...

For some two years, I carried a rough outline of a case for my wife’s piano books in the back of my mind. Having been scared away by AutoCad’s threat to my credit card balance, and then frustrated with TurboCad’s coming-through-the-back-door work method, I decided to bite the bullet and try Sketchup. Otherwise, I’m back to my old CrayolaCAD.
Well, Sketchup was a little tricky at first, but I managed to fudge a little here and bump a little there, and finally with one cathartic brain fart, ...

I designed this bookcase using the Golden Mean ratio. The narrowest part of the side frames (where the middle shelf is located) is 0.6 the height of the bookcase.

The dyed maple frames are doweled except for the top of the center stile, which has two pocket screws. (The center stile and lower front stretcher are not the same thickness as the other frame parts, giving the project a nice shadow line.)
The frames are...
