Modern Modular Bookcase

604 days ago by bfd | 9 comments »

This is my entry for the bookcase challenge. I designed my bookcase to be modular and have simple modern lines. I eliminated the “top” and “bottom” to give the piece an open feel and to reinforce the feeling that the shelves are “floating”. The case or “shroud” is 1-1/2” thick and made up of (2) 3/4” qtr sawn ash plywood or veneered mdf. The sides would be clear coated to contrast with the walnut shelves. The back would be...

Greene and Greene Bookcase Challenge04

589 days ago by Karson | 14 comments »

Posted as a blog entry, for the official contest. For the Challenge04 I decided to design a Greene and Greene Bookcase. The Greene brothers, Charles and Henry decided to create a new and fresh style different from the Arts and Craft designs that was becoming popular in that time. Some of their designs were influenced by some Asian furniture. I opted then to build a Greene and Greene Style bookcase using breadboards and splines for the top but also creating a mid rail in the middl...

A Bookcase Entry

613 days ago by Al Navas | 29 comments »

Here we go, folks – this time for real. Someone must be first, and I volunteer. This is a barrister bookcase of my own design. I created it in eCabinet Systems, the program I use to design and create furniture pieces. Dimensions are: 60”H x 36”W x 14”D This could be built in modules, but I elected to do the bookcase as one piece. The model can be easily modified, now that the entire bookcase is designed. I also attach an exploded view, to pique your interest ...

challenge04 a little to late but oh well

612 days ago by cburch | 11 comments »

timing is everything I guess.. I had just finished loading this bookcase up a week ago… It’s contemporary in design, simple joinery.biscuts and rabbits, all solid white oak, with 1/4” oak sheet backing. It’s 8’ wide, floor to ceiling, fitted between walls in out loft office. This is my first post, I have the feeling the pics will not work… so the addresses are below. This is my first dive into real woodworking. Done in my basement with a minimum of tools...

Greene and Greene influenced bookcase design

591 days ago by RLS | 2 comments »

This bookcase design is my interpretation of a combination of some Greene and Greene designs. Unfortunately, my computer skills are not good enough to show the details. In the 3D file, for example(which created the rendered drawing below), I couldn’t get the proportions of the feet right (they are not as flat as they appear in the rendered drawing, below). Nor could I get the crown moulding “cloud lift” detail to show except as some dashed lines. Further, one aspect of t...

Huck's Book Case

Ok here is my entry for the bookcase challenge. This piece is a complex design and I hope that I will not build this one. Although beings that my wife loves this design it will probably have to be built. The original design was to be made from a sustainable material. Though it is shown in three different woods paduk, walnut, and lace wood. I would like to claim this idea for my own original idea, but my wife actually came up with this. Hey she could almost make it as my designer. Good ...

Stackable Bookcase

606 days ago by oakdust | 5 comments »

I attempted to design more than a bookcase I was trying for a piece of universal furniture. My plan is to build two identical book cases that can be used alone, stacked or incorporated with a desk top. This design would be great for small apartments or school dorms. The curved frames are made using bent wood lamination, and the side panels from ¾’ Hardwood veneer plywood which would add strength and stability to the design. To give the cabinets a look of fine furniture I would use box joint...

Bookcase Challenge04 #1: Bookcase entry – Challenge04

603 days ago by lightweightladyleftie | 8 comments »

I had already started working on the design for this bookcase when I became aware of this contest. Realizing that my built-in application (designed to conceal ductwork) was quite different from the needs of most people, I slightly redesigned the crown to make it a free-standing bookcase (although, for the sake of safety, I would still attach it to a wall if I were to place this one in my home). The close-up of the crown shows the area for built-in lighting which is simply a 36” fluore...

Bookcase Design #1: A Bookcase Design

604 days ago by Alan Young | 16 comments »

Here is my entry for the bookcase design project. I drew my design in Sketchup. I have designed a bookcase that has a “flavor” of the early American Secretaries by cabinetmakers such as Townsend and Goddard etc… But rather than a quill and ink- my design allows for more modern conveniences such as a lap top computer- while still making plenty of space for books. My new design for a bookcase incorporates a good deal of moldings, and features a slide out drawer/desktop.T...

Corner Bookshelf

589 days ago by Chips | 7 comments »

When I read about challenge 04 in Popular Woodworking Newsletter my first thought was to give it a try. The next thought was to design something that didn’t look like a box. Then I remembered that I had turned a square book case 45 degrees and put it into a corner. From there I took inspiration from other project I have built. A Corner Pantry Cabinet I built for my daughter and a reproduction of a 200 year old spice box that I built for my wife. When you add to that my enjoyment of carving...
