Hello all. Being as our second child is due on Sunday, and my wife is feeling that she may be early, I figured I’d better get this in ASAP :)

When I read about challenge 04 in Popular Woodworking Newsletter my first thought was to give it a try. The next thought was to design something that didn’t look like a box. Then I remembered that I had turned a square book case 45 degrees and put it into a corner. From there I took inspiration from other project I have built. This is a Greene and Greene inspired bookcase with pinned mortise-and-tenon joints with square ebony plugs to decorate the pinned joints. There are also breadboards ends to keep the top flat. The corner pieces (or legs) are slightly tapered to be wider at the bottom. The back of the bookcase is finished so it can be placed all or partially away from a wall. All side of the book case feature a cloud lift pattern.

Well, for kicks and giggles I decided to try to create a bookcase entry in Sketchup for the competition. I have no delusions of winning anything, but I thought I’d give it a try. I though of what I could do to make a traditional bookcase stand-out, and not coming-up with anything I decided to mess-around with curved surfaces in Sketchup. I came up with my design when thinking of ways to make the shelves flexible in configuration and placement. I like the more modern “cubby-hole” look of shelving, so that different sized items can be easily stored and seen. (Not just books)
In the end, I decided on a common method for hanging cabinets- the french cleat. This allows for flexibility in how the shelves are configured. I then combined this method of shelving within a frame, to create the overall bookcase.

This is my entry for the bookcase challenge. I designed my bookcase to be modular and have simple modern lines. I eliminated the “top” and “bottom” to give the piece an open feel and to reinforce the feeling that the shelves are “floating”. The case or “shroud” is 1-1/2” thick and made up of (2) 3/4” qtr sawn ash plywood or veneered mdf. The sides would be clear coated to contrast with the walnut shelves. The back would be...

Here we go, folks – this time for real. Someone must be first, and I volunteer.
This is a barrister bookcase of my own design. I created it in eCabinet Systems, the program I use to design and create furniture pieces.

As it seems with every project, there are always set-backs. I was nearly finished except for the bottom doors when I ran out of stain. The paint store that custom-mixed the stain is 35 miles away so I decided to experiment with dye.
Well, not on the bookcase, but on my hair. Do you like the results? When I finally got the stain and finished the doors, I had only three hinges for the bottom doors. The top doors were made with an additional ¼” added to make the doors 1” thick wh...
