Stackable Bookcase

280 days ago by oakdust | 5 comments »

I attempted to design more than a bookcase I was trying for a piece of universal furniture. My plan is to build two identical book cases that can be used alone, stacked or incorporated with a desk top. This design would be great for small apartments or school dorms. The curved frames are made using bent wood lamination, and the side panels from ¾’ Hardwood veneer plywood which would add strength and stability to the design. To give the cabinets a look of fine furniture I would use box joint...

Bookcase for Kids

I saw the posting on the Popular Woodworking blog and figured I would throw my lot in. This is a bookcase I built for my son and I liked it so much I built a second for my daughter. It is only 4’ tall and 28” wide but it is 14” deep to accommodate larger children’s books as well as any stray toys (mostly toys in my daughter’s case). I also used this as an experiment to see what would be involved in building something without plywood. It is standard frame and panel construction and i...

Slide Together & Apart Bookcase

283 days ago by CharlesWilson | 3 comments »

Slide Together & Apart Bookcase This bookcase was completed in early February, 2008 and accomplished a number of objectives: 1. I finally put to use some oak boards that I brought to Connecticut from Minnesota 30 years ago.2. I was able to reuse some boards taken out of a stereo cabinet that I had modified.3. I verified Jerry Work’s claims concerning the Festool dovetail bits (They don’t need to have a rabbet cut before going into wood at full depth).4. I created ...

Huck's Book Case

Ok here is my entry for the bookcase challenge. This piece is a complex design and I hope that I will not build this one. Although beings that my wife loves this design it will probably have to be built. The original design was to be made from a sustainable material. Though it is shown in three different woods paduk, walnut, and lace wood. I would like to claim this idea for my own original idea, but my wife actually came up with this. Hey she could almost make it as my designer. Good ...

Inspired by this fine huntboard This bookcase has 3 sections, the 2 on the ends will handle most novel while the center section is for larger books that never seem to fit in a normal book case, there is 160 ” of shelve space in the 70” piecehttp://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff175/jledington2002/Scan_2.jpg This design I pulled from my design notebook. It is a design That worked up for a customer, but I never got to build. I think it would look good build out of walnut with a...

Bookcase Challenge entry

Well, for kicks and giggles I decided to try to create a bookcase entry in Sketchup for the competition. I have no delusions of winning anything, but I thought I’d give it a try. I though of what I could do to make a traditional bookcase stand-out, and not coming-up with anything I decided to mess-around with curved surfaces in Sketchup. After some tinkering, I had a basic design that you see here: It’s more of an art piece than a bookcase I suppose, but it was t...

Bookcase Challenge

286 days ago by CanadianWoodChuck | 9 comments »

Hi All I just finished playing with my Sketchup drawing for the bookcase challenge. I’m really enjoying using sketchup for my conceptual drawings. I’m so glad that LJ comes up with these ideas, it gives me a great chance to play in Sketchup. If I was to build this bookcase I would love to use Oak veneer core plywood for the carcus, oak trim where required and a contrasting wood like padauk for the face frames. This huge bookcase would cover an area of approximately 5̵...

Bookcase Challenge redux

Alright—newbie status is showing here. Since yesterday’s post incorporated a couple of photo links in a format incompatible with this forum, here goes try number 2 (now that I’ve found the directions on how to link them—yes, I’m a guy and I don’t apologize for it). The photo above shows one of the more complicated bookcase-style projects I’ve done – but it doesn’t meet the criteria of this challenge, whereas …. Photo 2R...

It’s 8’ wide, floor to ceiling, fitted between walls in out loft office. This is my first post, I have the feeling the pics will not work… so the addresses are below. This is my first dive into real woodworking. Done in my basement with a minimum of tools...

Challenge04 #1: Noah's Ark Book Case

286 days ago by romansfivefive | 11 comments »

Based on the fact that there is no way I have yet developed the skills to create the kind of furniture I see posted here daily, I wanted to go with something a little more whimsical in the hopes that my skills as an artist would compensate for limited experience as a craftsman. I had this idea for an Noah’s Ark Book Shelf that is at is’t base just a plain rectangular book shelf with a few extras that (I think) make it much more fun. I tried my hand at sketchup and have come to...
