My Bookcase Entry

172 days ago by Thuan | 5 comments »

For your consideration is my bookcase design entry. Before I approach this contest, I had to think about what the core of the the contest is about. I had to understand what the result should be and then put my spin on it. Chances are, it would have to have to be a unique spin on an ancient piece of furniture that is universally appealing. This has to be photogenic to compete with the other wood working magazine, and yet has a calling to the Popular woodworkers. I beging with the ...

Bookcase Contest Entry

172 days ago by David Hagan | 4 comments »

Hey All, When I saw this contest I figured that it would be best to come up with a novel entry. So instead of a normal bookcase, I decided to go for a bookcase. Specifically a Childrens Bookcase. This bookcase was designed to be hung low on a wall for easy access. When closed the bookcase looks similar to a giant children’s book. When open, the children’s books are easily accessible. Some pictures are at the links below. Picture 1 - Bookcase Closed Picture 2 - Bookc...

Sliding Dovetail Bookcase for challenge

172 days ago by wheresmytools | 3 comments »

I’ve never used SketchUp, but do like coming up with different designs. And Sketchup seems to be pretty easy to come up to learn. I made a similar bookcase with stopped dadoes but it wasn’t too sturdy. So I had to nail on a back panel, making it one-sided. This one has sliding dovetails making it easy to make up and fast to assemble. The SketchUp makes the dovetails easy; just draw a rectangle, use the pencil to draw the area that the router bit would cut out and then use t...

Waterfall Bookcase

The Waterfall Bookcase Let me start this off with not only is this my first challenge, but it is also my first blog entry so I hope I’m notbreaking any rules here. This bookcase is only my third project and it has been a challenge. It’s been something like 5 years in the making and somewhat of a family joke (yeah, I’ll do it when Dad finishes the bookcase…) but I have this bookcase that is almost ready for assembly and thought I’d present it in this challen...

Bookcase for the Challange

175 days ago by GaryK | 21 comments »

Well, here is my entry for the bookcase challenge. It’s meant to be constructed using standard frame and panel construction using solid wood, exceptfor the back which would be plywood. I have never seen a bookcase on wheels before, so that dictated the smaller size. Too heavy and itwouldn’t roll very easily on carpet. The advantages to a bookcase on wheels is the ability to move itfrom room to room or around the room without having to empty it. The reason for it opening ...

challenge04,bookcase,design,plan

I saw this design challenge just surfing the net one day. I just so happened to be working on a bookcase design of my own. So here it is. In my design is made to be broken down easily to be shipped. So the spacers are made of metal. I don’t know if that qualifies for the challenge. But it is just a design. They could easily be made out of wooden dowels or even antiqued cooper pipe for that matter. In my mock ups I used white ash. One is done natural with a tung oil and wax fini...

Around the House #1: Challenge04, Cherry Bookcase

175 days ago by jgourlay | 2 comments »

Several years ago, while pondering a pile of books that had for too long served as a coffee table, I thought it might be good to stop building jigs for the shop and actually make something useful. I found it unsatisfying that most book cases offer a “flat” front and that if the piece had aesthetic features they either took the form of “decoration” such as overdone moldings or curving of the form on the sides. Decoration is, well, decoration. I am not a “high...

The Tree of Knowledge

175 days ago by greatsaltlake | 8 comments »

When I learned about the bookcase design challenge I immediately wanted to design this bookshelf. I came up with the original idea when I took a furniture design class at BYU from Kip Christensen. I decided then to fully design and build a different project which I will post later on my blog. I draw inspiration for this project from, well… trees. What better inspiration is there to a woodworker? As I designed this project ideas kept flowing and the end product just kept getting bette...

I Rise to the Challenge ... sort of

177 days ago by Hibernicvs | 4 comments »

Okay, here’s my best shot. I tried to use “sketch up,” but I figured that, combined with tax time (I’m a CPA) the frustration was too much. I hand-drew my idea from a sketch I made during singing practice a few weeks ago, while listening to the Basses and Baritones (or, if you want an inside joke, the Third and Fourth Tenors) screw up their parts while the director tore out what little hair he has left. Of course, I did this while watching some weird Sherlock Holmes...

Le Petite Bookcase

178 days ago by BertJ | 4 comments »

I designed this bookcase using the Golden Mean ratio. The narrowest part of the side frames (where the middle shelf is located) is 0.6 the height of the bookcase. http://www.shininghorizonschool.org-a.googlepages.com/orientalbookcase The dyed maple frames are doweled except for the top of the center stile, which has two pocket screws. (The center stile and lower front stretcher are not the same thickness as the other frame parts, giving the project a nice shadow line.) The frames are...
