This bookcase design is my interpretation of a combination of some Greene and Greene designs. Unfortunately, my computer skills are not good enough to show the details. In the 3D file, for example(which created the rendered drawing below), I couldn’t get the proportions of the feet right (they are not as flat as they appear in the rendered drawing, below). Nor could I get the crown moulding “cloud lift” detail to show except as some dashed lines. Further, one aspect of t...

Hello all. Being as our second child is due on Sunday, and my wife is feeling that she may be early, I figured I’d better get this in ASAP :)
I am new to Sketchup, and far from a “SU guru”, but I hope I managed to do at least a passable job on this…forgive me for any errors.
This bookshelf is inspired by Japanese Shogi Screens. Built to be very open and “airy”, the design allows it to be used both in the center of the room as a divider (Like a Shoji S...

This is a concept bookcase. It is built using 8/4 hardwood of choice planed to 1 1/2 inches. The horizontal shelves (except for the top) have two notches cut for the vertical trim stiles.
There are three sketchup files. The first shows the bookcase with only the shelves and outside vertical sides. The second shows the bookcase after the inside vertical sides have been added the the third shows the complete bookcase. You can see from the various files how the components fit together.

For your consideration is my bookcase design entry.
Before I approach this contest, I had to think about what the core of the the contest is about. I had to understand what the result should be and then put my spin on it. Chances are, it would have to have to be a unique spin on an ancient piece of furniture that is universally appealing. This has to be photogenic to compete with the other wood working magazine, and yet has a calling to the Popular woodworkers.
I beging with the ...

Hey All,
When I saw this contest I figured that it would be best to come up with a novel entry. So instead of a normal bookcase, I decided to go for a bookcase. Specifically a Childrens Bookcase. This bookcase was designed to be hung low on a wall for easy access. When closed the bookcase looks similar to a giant children’s book. When open, the children’s books are easily accessible. Some pictures are at the links below.
Picture 1 - Bookcase Closed
Picture 2 - Bookc...

I’ve never used SketchUp, but do like coming up with different designs. And Sketchup seems to be pretty easy to come up to learn.
I made a similar bookcase with stopped dadoes but it wasn’t too sturdy. So I had to nail on a back panel, making it one-sided. This one has sliding dovetails making it easy to make up and fast to assemble. The SketchUp makes the dovetails easy; just draw a rectangle, use the pencil to draw the area that the router bit would cut out and then use t...

The Waterfall Bookcase
Let me start this off with not only is this my first challenge, but it is also my first blog entry so I hope I’m notbreaking any rules here.
This bookcase is only my third project and it has been a challenge. It’s been something like 5 years in the making and somewhat of a family joke (yeah, I’ll do it when Dad
finishes the bookcase…) but I have this bookcase that is almost ready for assembly and thought I’d present it in this challen...

Well, here is my entry for the bookcase challenge.
It’s meant to be constructed using standard frame and panel construction using solid wood, exceptfor the back which would be plywood.
I have never seen a bookcase on wheels before, so that dictated the smaller size. Too heavy and itwouldn’t roll very easily on carpet. The advantages to a bookcase on wheels is the ability to move itfrom room to room or around the room without having to empty it.
The reason for it opening ...

I saw this design challenge just surfing the net one day. I just so happened to be working on a bookcase design of my own. So here it is. In my design is made to be broken down easily to be shipped. So the spacers are made of metal. I don’t know if that qualifies for the challenge. But it is just a design. They could easily be made out of wooden dowels or even antiqued cooper pipe for that matter. In my mock ups I used white ash. One is done natural with a tung oil and wax fini...

Several years ago, while pondering a pile of books that had for too long served as a coffee table, I thought it might be good to stop building jigs for the shop and actually make something useful. I found it unsatisfying that most book cases offer a “flat” front and that if the piece had aesthetic features they either took the form of “decoration” such as overdone moldings or curving of the form on the sides.
Decoration is, well, decoration. I am not a “high...
