This bookcase had to be designed for a Church, and be movable. It also had to fit comfortably against the back of pews when been stored.I used European white oak which i quarter sawed myself, the shelves sit 90 degrees to the face edge.I made hold down blocks for the top, any screws used were solid brass SH and facing to heaven! The bookcase is movable on castors.Coated with sanding sealer and finished with about 8 – 10 coats of clear wax.

First off I’d like to say thank you to everyone for the warm welcome to Lumberjocks, you seem like a really friendly bunch.
The thing that influenced my design of this bookcase is my design for a desk that I will be building for my office. The desk that I will be building has a set of file drawers the can be seen from the side so that it shows off the details for the joinery, so I thought I would incorporate a set of drawers at the bottom of this bookcase. The drawers are a lighter color...

I call this the cricket shelf because it kind of reminds me of a cricket. The lights on top look like the antenna and so forth. At any rate I was trying to create a shelving system that didn’t require any hardware or standards to support the shelves. The idea here is that friction alone will support the shelf and its contents.
The shelves are 12”x19 3/16”. Each of the curved pieces are exactly the same, I just use different portions of the arc in each area. This would help since you w...

This is a Greene and Greene inspired bookcase with pinned mortise-and-tenon joints with square ebony plugs to decorate the pinned joints. There are also breadboards ends to keep the top flat. The corner pieces (or legs) are slightly tapered to be wider at the bottom. The back of the bookcase is finished so it can be placed all or partially away from a wall. All side of the book case feature a cloud lift pattern.
The mortise-and-tenon joints could easily be replaced with biscuits depend...

The Sun Case design was a fun challenge for me, since it was the first time I’ve really designed something with the intent of looking good. (My only previous design was a platform bed, which was all function, no form.) I started with 2 simple design goals:
Keep the design open… aka not a true case. Inspired by: supersystem one
Center around curves… not traditional for a book case, but interesting. This inspiration came from several places, but the initial seed...

For your consideration is my bookcase design entry.
Before I approach this contest, I had to think about what the core of the the contest is about. I had to understand what the result should be and then put my spin on it. Chances are, it would have to have to be a unique spin on an ancient piece of furniture that is universally appealing. This has to be photogenic to compete with the other wood working magazine, and yet has a calling to the Popular woodworkers.
I beging with the ...

I attempted to design more than a bookcase I was trying for a piece of universal furniture. My plan is to build two identical book cases that can be used alone, stacked or incorporated with a desk top. This design would be great for small apartments or school dorms. The curved frames are made using bent wood lamination, and the side panels from ¾’ Hardwood veneer plywood which would add strength and stability to the design. To give the cabinets a look of fine furniture I would use box joint...

Alright—newbie status is showing here. Since yesterday’s post incorporated a couple of photo links in a format incompatible with this forum, here goes try number 2 (now that I’ve found the directions on how to link them—yes, I’m a guy and I don’t apologize for it).
The photo above shows one of the more complicated bookcase-style projects I’ve done – but it doesn’t meet the criteria of this challenge, whereas ….

I’ve built several different bookcase styles over the years. The largest project of this type included a wall of display shelves, cabinets, a fireplace mantle and fireplace surround (photo 1). But PWW’s challenge is for “a simple bookcase design”. Well, I did three matching bookcases in 1974 that were quick projects. Those bookcases are still going strong and remain in full, unabashed, use even though the home they are in now is far nicer than the upper flat we wer...

What an exciting opportunity to design a project with the potential to have it published! I’ve always been interested in getting my work published and exercising my writing skills at the same time. When this contest presented itself I vowed to make sure that I submitted an entry and am just making it in under the wire. I hope that everyone enjoys my submission and as always will appreciate the comments of the lumberjocks community.
