(Yet another?) Bookshelf

585 days ago by Alin Dobra | 7 comments »

The design of this entry in the Challenge04 contest is based on a bookshelf I build for my son ( you can see the project here: http://lumberjocks.com/projects/3968 ) This design and the actual bookshelf I build for my son try to address a number of things I do not like about most bookshelves I see in stores, the web, this site, etc. 1. Non Boxy I do not particularly (or at all) like bookshelves that are boxy. A completely enclosed bookshelf traps the items inside and makes them out of r...

Corner Bookshelf

586 days ago by Chips | 7 comments »

When I read about challenge 04 in Popular Woodworking Newsletter my first thought was to give it a try. The next thought was to design something that didn’t look like a box. Then I remembered that I had turned a square book case 45 degrees and put it into a corner. From there I took inspiration from other project I have built. A Corner Pantry Cabinet I built for my daughter and a reproduction of a 200 year old spice box that I built for my wife. When you add to that my enjoyment of carving...

Waterfall Bookcase

591 days ago by Reifer | 7 comments »

The Waterfall Bookcase Let me start this off with not only is this my first challenge, but it is also my first blog entry so I hope I’m notbreaking any rules here. This bookcase is only my third project and it has been a challenge. It’s been something like 5 years in the making and somewhat of a family joke (yeah, I’ll do it when Dad finishes the bookcase…) but I have this bookcase that is almost ready for assembly and thought I’d present it in this challen...

challenge04 bookcase challenge

596 days ago by tomfidgen | 7 comments »

Bookcase Challenge04 ( revised pics ) When I first heard of this contest I simply thought, hmmm, bookcases, another contest, another bookcase. And that was basically the end of it, I didn’t rush out to my drafting table and start scribbling, nor did I give it much thought. Another book shelf I thought, why try to re-invent the wheel right.?Ahhh, but as it goes, that very night I lie in bed awake, staring up at the ceiling with only one thing on my mind….a book case? So, the foll...

Bookcase for Kids

603 days ago by DODEngineer | 7 comments »

I saw the posting on the Popular Woodworking blog and figured I would throw my lot in. This is a bookcase I built for my son and I liked it so much I built a second for my daughter. It is only 4’ tall and 28” wide but it is 14” deep to accommodate larger children’s books as well as any stray toys (mostly toys in my daughter’s case). I also used this as an experiment to see what would be involved in building something without plywood. It is standard frame and panel construction and i...

Greene and Greene Book Case/Computer Cabinet.

585 days ago by remdam | 6 comments »

I’ve been planing on making a book case for a spare room in my house for awhile now. This contest was great in getting me to focus and finally finish the design. If you’re familiar with the Greene brothers and the Gamble house, you’ll see a lot of the design for this book case comes from the smaller of the two living room book cases. It’s a good size to fit into a guest bedroom. Besides holding books, I also want the piece to hide a small server computer, DSL router, eth...

Bookcase Design Challenge - Configurable Shelves w/ French Cleats

585 days ago by MattO | 6 comments »

I came up with my design when thinking of ways to make the shelves flexible in configuration and placement. I like the more modern “cubby-hole” look of shelving, so that different sized items can be easily stored and seen. (Not just books) In the end, I decided on a common method for hanging cabinets- the french cleat. This allows for flexibility in how the shelves are configured. I then combined this method of shelving within a frame, to create the overall bookcase. I drew ...

challenge04,bookcase,design,plan

I saw this design challenge just surfing the net one day. I just so happened to be working on a bookcase design of my own. So here it is. In my design is made to be broken down easily to be shipped. So the spacers are made of metal. I don’t know if that qualifies for the challenge. But it is just a design. They could easily be made out of wooden dowels or even antiqued cooper pipe for that matter. In my mock ups I used white ash. One is done natural with a tung oil and wax fini...

Simple Hanging Bookshelf

599 days ago by A_Train | 6 comments »

Well, here is my entry for the Bookcase Challenge. I actually completed this project a few weeks before reading about the competition, but thought this would be a great opportunity to learn SketchUp. My wife was looking for something that would allow her to have easy access to her reference materials while working at her desk. I came up with this simple bookcase. Simple Hanging Bookcase The overall dimensions of the bookcase are 30” wide by 25 1/8 “ high. The three shelves a...
