This is my entry for the bookcase challenge. I designed my bookcase to be modular and have simple modern lines. I eliminated the “top” and “bottom” to give the piece an open feel and to reinforce the feeling that the shelves are “floating”. The case or “shroud” is 1-1/2” thick and made up of (2) 3/4” qtr sawn ash plywood or veneered mdf. The sides would be clear coated to contrast with the walnut shelves. The back would be...

Ok here is my entry for the bookcase challenge. This piece is a complex design and I hope that I will not build this one. Although beings that my wife loves this design it will probably have to be built. The original design was to be made from a sustainable material. Though it is shown in three different woods paduk, walnut, and lace wood. I would like to claim this idea for my own original idea, but my wife actually came up with this. I just finished playing with my Sketchup drawing for the bookcase challenge. I’m really enjoying using sketchup for my conceptual drawings. I’m so glad that LJ comes up with these ideas, it gives me a great chance to play in Sketchup.
If I was to build this bookcase I would love to use Oak veneer core plywood for the carcus, oak trim where required and a contrasting wood like padauk for the face frames.

This design is a takeoff of a night table design I did last year. The influence is the architecture of Bhutan. I graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso, one of only about three places in the world that share this type of architecture. When I learned about the bookcase design challenge I immediately wanted to design this bookshelf. I came up with the original idea when I took a furniture design class at BYU from Kip Christensen. I decided then to fully design and build a different project which I will post later on my blog.

I had already started working on the design for this bookcase when I became aware of this contest. Realizing that my built-in application (designed to conceal ductwork) was quite different from the needs of most people, I slightly redesigned the crown to make it a free-standing bookcase (although, for the sake of safety, I would still attach it to a wall if I were to place this one in my home).
