A Bookcase Entry

194 days ago by Al Navas | 29 comments »

Here we go, folks – this time for real. Someone must be first, and I volunteer. This is a barrister bookcase of my own design. I created it in eCabinet Systems, the program I use to design and create furniture pieces. Dimensions are: 60”H x 36”W x 14”D This could be built in modules, but I elected to do the bookcase as one piece. The model can be easily modified, now that the entire bookcase is designed. I also attach an exploded view, to pique your interest ...

Challenge04 entry...Shoji screen inspired Book Case...better get this in now!

172 days ago by Ryan Shervill | 22 comments »

Hello all. Being as our second child is due on Sunday, and my wife is feeling that she may be early, I figured I’d better get this in ASAP :) I am new to Sketchup, and far from a “SU guru”, but I hope I managed to do at least a passable job on this…forgive me for any errors. This bookshelf is inspired by Japanese Shogi Screens. Built to be very open and “airy”, the design allows it to be used both in the center of the room as a divider (Like a Shoji S...

Bookcase for the Challange

176 days ago by GaryK | 21 comments »

Well, here is my entry for the bookcase challenge. It’s meant to be constructed using standard frame and panel construction using solid wood, exceptfor the back which would be plywood. I have never seen a bookcase on wheels before, so that dictated the smaller size. Too heavy and itwouldn’t roll very easily on carpet. The advantages to a bookcase on wheels is the ability to move itfrom room to room or around the room without having to empty it. The reason for it opening ...

Bookcase Design #1: A Bookcase Design

185 days ago by Alan Young | 16 comments »

Here is my entry for the bookcase design project. I drew my design in Sketchup. I have designed a bookcase that has a “flavor” of the early American Secretaries by cabinetmakers such as Townsend and Goddard etc… But rather than a quill and ink- my design allows for more modern conveniences such as a lap top computer- while still making plenty of space for books. My new design for a bookcase incorporates a good deal of moldings, and features a slide out drawer/desktop.T...

Research Bookcase

179 days ago by MsDebbieP | 15 comments »

My personal challenge is to create something for each of the LJ challenges. So far I’ve been able to meet that goal. This particular challenge was difficult 1) because I’m not much on designing and 2) I haven’t figured out that darned Sketchup yet… argh. Goal: I wanted to design a place where I could sit and read and have ready access to books for researching. I also wanted it to be just desk level so I could tuck it under a window. Design: A central table top...

Bookcase Challenge entry

192 days ago by Greg Wurst | 15 comments »

Well, for kicks and giggles I decided to try to create a bookcase entry in Sketchup for the competition. I have no delusions of winning anything, but I thought I’d give it a try. I though of what I could do to make a traditional bookcase stand-out, and not coming-up with anything I decided to mess-around with curved surfaces in Sketchup. After some tinkering, I had a basic design that you see here: It’s more of an art piece than a bookcase I suppose, but it was t...

Greene and Greene Bookcase Challenge04

170 days ago by Karson | 14 comments »

Posted as a blog entry, for the official contest. For the Challenge04 I decided to design a Greene and Greene Bookcase. The Greene brothers, Charles and Henry decided to create a new and fresh style different from the Arts and Craft designs that was becoming popular in that time. Some of their designs were influenced by some Asian furniture. I opted then to build a Greene and Greene Style bookcase using breadboards and splines for the top but also creating a mid rail in the middl...

Fudge a Little Here, Bump a Little There

170 days ago by FloridaNoCypress | 12 comments »

For some two years, I carried a rough outline of a case for my wife’s piano books in the back of my mind. Having been scared away by AutoCad’s threat to my credit card balance, and then frustrated with TurboCad’s coming-through-the-back-door work method, I decided to bite the bullet and try Sketchup. Otherwise, I’m back to my old CrayolaCAD. Well, Sketchup was a little tricky at first, but I managed to fudge a little here and bump a little there, and finally with one cathartic brain fart, ...

Done in my basement with a minimum of tools...

Challenge04 #1: Noah's Ark Book Case

193 days ago by romansfivefive | 11 comments »

Based on the fact that there is no way I have yet developed the skills to create the kind of furniture I see posted here daily, I wanted to go with something a little more whimsical in the hopes that my skills as an artist would compensate for limited experience as a craftsman. I had this idea for an Noah’s Ark Book Shelf that is at is’t base just a plain rectangular book shelf with a few extras that (I think) make it much more fun. I tried my hand at sketchup and have come to...
