This is so exciting – New era at LumberJocks.com begins right now – the era of video tutorials. I just finished our first video tutorial screencast titled ”How to submit entry into the Bookcase Design Challenge”. It outlines all of the steps in posting the blog entry, embedding the pictures as well as the final project file and then submitting it properly to the Challenge.
Any feedback is much appreciated since I want to replace our wordy help section with this kind...

I rarely build from plans. Never have. I’m not really sure why. Maybe it’s a commentary on my inherent need to be right. I am, however, not immune to inspiration! My favorite part of LJs is seeing all of your projects. I have been exposed to some truly amazing pieces. My favorites are the truly original designs.
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about design. What makes a design original, unique, or inspiring? There are any number of “formulas” for good...

So is anyone up for a timed SketchUp challenge?
A friend of mine offered this although I’ve modified it slightly.
Draw a simple table like the one in the image above. Make it 24” tall (I forgot to add that to the drawing) and sized as shown. Use components or don’t. No need for dimensions, joinery or materials. Post an image of your drawing and the time it took you to draw it. The deadline is Wednesday, Feb 18 at 5:00 pm CST.
Edited to add: Don’t use any p...

Halloween Challenge: LumberJocks | HomeRefurbers | GardenTenders
That’s right. You’ve been challenged!. You have until the end of the month to build a Halloween decoration for outdoors and enter it in our very first Halloween LumberJocks Challenge. What’s the size? That’s up to you. What’s it made of? Wood, of course (and, yes, you can add non-wood objects to it as needed). We have all seen those cemeteries and skeletons in people’s yards, well we ar...

Here is my second completed interpretation of our jewelry box project. To restate the challenge, I am trying to stay somewhat true to the original subject while exploring various design aesthetics. I was brainstorming some genres of design, and “Asian” came to mind. I couldn’t tell you the first thing about Asian design. Maybe that is for the best. My interpretation is purely off the cuff. I immediately got an image of a pagoda and couldn’t shake it. I was intrigued by the challenge of...

Here is my first completed interpretation of our jewelry box project. I decided to start with a refined rustic aesthetic (one of my favorites). The best part – it didn’t cost a dime…everything here came from the firewood pile!
By refined rustic, I am referring to a design movement at home in more than just log cabins. It incorporates live-edge and/or log as an accent. The amount of “rustic” can vary from a subtle surprise to an overt theme. I am currently enamored with live-edge m...

LumberJocks raised the bar again with over 50 entries in our Bookcase Challenge. You proved that it’s possible to be very creative even with such a common project and you made the judging process extremely tough for the editors of the Popular Woodworking.
Here’s the summary of the event as well as the announcement of the winner and runner-ups by Glen Huey, Senior Editor of PW:
“Congratulations everyone. The LumberJocks excelled at designing great looking, buildable...
