On July 3rd I threw together a chair to bring to the 4th party the following day. I decided to use up some scrap 2×4s. I had no plan, no chair experience, and about 5 hours time in which to make it, so I just sort of winged-it, inventing as I went. Here’s the test-fit of the cut pieces for which I used my miter saw and band saw.
It looked somewhat chair-like, at least.
I used countersunk deck screws and glue. I banged pieces around in the clamps to get everything exac...

This commissioned piece is a hand carved, ebonized, faintly gilded, and upholstered, wing back chair. It is upholstered in black leather and faux hide, over 18 hand tied springs. It has come to be known as “Bambi”.
As always, I welcome your comments AND critiques on this latest project.
This custom designed and fit chair is for a very petite lady who has always had problems with chairs fitting her. It is a “modified” wing back chair that is actually designed to be more of an office chai...

I have a client that lives close to me, and we have had a lot of fun designing and building things for their home. They sort of “pushed” me into quitting my day job by offering a long term commission to transform their home with functional-art pieces one at a time, according to an overall game plan. They had a general idea of what they wanted, but needed someone to turn the dream into wood.
They were willing to adapt their ideas to mine, and vice versa, and I have really appr...

I have a great friend that is learning to do woodworking. He has been working hard at it the past 5 years, or so, and building some adult Adirondack Chairs was his first entry into making his own project. I suggested a curved seat, and a curved back for comfort (I had spent about 18 months perfecting my own Adirondack chair design, before I gave up), but he wanted to make them simpler.
He found a plan on the internet, and went to work. They started out as gifts, and then he decided to s...

Okay, at this point, legs are glued up, rails, stretchers are cut along with all the mortices and tenons. I decided to make two chairs and ottomans to completion and then come back to the other two. The next step is to cut the stiles and tenon their ends. I planned for 3/8” tenons and cut them at a horizontal router, (although a good backer board and dado setup works as well).
The glue up of each side – the tenons fit tight, so I bevel the ends even before I dry f...

Hello everyone, a few people have asked me for plans on how to build the folded slotted chair I made so I decided to give it my best shot to measure the pieces and give a description on how it was done, so here we go.

Hey Guys. This is something I thought of today (on my day off) and built within a couple of hours. I didnt use any plans….just an idea in my head. I am going fishing tomorrow and needed somewhere to keep my fish and sit, so decided why not do both at once. I used all scrap pine wood – 1X4’s and 2X4’s (I ran out towards the end and had to finish up with OSB). It sits pretty comfortable, and the height is perfect!
Its definitely not going to win any fine wood ...

My appologies to all LumberJocks. And to the king of comedy himself, George Gobel. And to the estate of George Gobel. And to to Marin County Fair. And to all the entire county of Marin. And to the whole great state of California. And to…well…everyone else….
