I started this project for a friend a few months ago and will be putting the finishing touches on soon. It is a plywood box with pine face frame. I used my Kreg Jig for all the joints. This is the largest project I have tackled to date and has been a great learning experience. The plan has changed from the original drawings as we learned along the way. In the final part of this series, I assemble and attach the base, install the handles, and apply the final finish to the top. This project was an incredible learning experience, and not in the way you might think. I actually found it incredibly challenging to step back from my primary shop tools, and focus only on the portable power tools. If there is one major negative aspect to working with plywood and other sheetgoods, its the fact that we have to deal with the ugly exposed edges. But with a little know-how and some strips of wood, you can dress up the edges so that only a trained eye can tell that the board is not completely made of solid wood.

Building and installing the carcasses was pretty straightforward. I enjoy not having a specific plan to work from as it allows you to change things up and continue designing while you build.
The picture below shows the big center unit completed. I built it first with a solid back, then realized that it would work better with a false back behind the TV so all the wires could be hidden but still easily accessed.

About a month ago I received a phone call asking if I would demonstrate the Art of Scrimshaw at the Senior Center in Marion, KS. The lady that called said that she has held onto a brochure of mine since 2003 that someone had given her then, and so she decided to see if I would come and talk to the group.

Well, I made it back into the shop this weekend, fingers are a bit tender and that slowed me down a tad but I did make some saw dust. I also got a package on Friday from Amazon with my new Kreg (small gloat) miter gauge in it. It went together fast and according to my engineer’s square was right on the money.
Building this entertainment center is a true learning experience. I want to get it built but I keep getting side tracked to build other items to aid in the making of the entertainment...
