How to find and harvest legal burls!

1650 days ago by OregonBurls | 37 comments »

Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also. I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know. It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....

Building an Outdoor Shower at the Beach

1769 days ago by npcarey | 3 comments »

My next big project is to construct a new outdoor shower enclosure at the back of my mother-in-law’s beach house. The current phase is design, which I think I’ve finally finished using Sketchup. I had been struggling with Sketchup until I heard about a web site called http://www.sketchupforwoodworkers.com where there were tutorials specifically for using sketchup for woodworking. That got me hooked and within a week of starting Sketchup I’ve come up with a very complete m...

Urban logging #1: A small victory in urban logging (part 1)

2158 days ago by Daren Nelson | 19 comments »

I am an “Urban Logger”. I only mill trees from town. There is a reason for this. I am a tree hugger (yea really) Not the stereotype, insert your own mental picture here, that have given that title a negative connotation. BUT, I do love trees. I think they are magnificent. I know this sounds weird from a guy that runs a sawmill, you would think I just feel they are for me to chop down and mill and make money from. It’s not like that at all . I started sawmilling just to keep ...

Standup Paddleboard Paddles #1: What the heck is a Standup Paddleboard?

2449 days ago by Bob Babcock | 14 comments »

My older brother loves water sports. Lately he has taken up SUP (standup paddleboarding) because it is easier on old geezers like himself. I say that with the greatest respect….I hope I can be half as active as he is when I’m 60+. It is basically a very large surf board with a paddle and (you gueesed it) you stand up the whole time. It’s great exercise, easier to catch waves and if no waves…just fun to paddle. If you are interested my brother has a great blog for begin...

Make a Folding Out Feed Table for your Table Saw

424 days ago by WoodJediNTraining | 16 comments »

This Week I show you how to make a folding out feed table for your table saw. This design was based after an article and plan found in a 2009 issue of Woodworker’s Journal Magazine. Originally the plan was designed for a Cabinet saw with a Biesemeyer Fence System, so I had to make some slight modifications for my Porter Cable Saw. In this 3 part video series I show you a step by step on building this project as well as talk about the modifications I had to make. The Article and plans ca...

Raised Garden Fencing #5: Finally - Done & Installed

1391 days ago by BlankMan | 9 comments »

Wow. I can’t believe I started this project a month ago almost to the day and this took me a month. Granted I got sidetracked with a few other projects along the way but still. It was kind of the kind of project I don’t really like. Repetitive. I like making one, or maybe two of something, to make twelve of something got a bit boring at times. Too much like an assembly line. Doing the first of each operation on the first one then the second was fun, on the twelfth, not so fun. But...

Little Tansu Inspired Case #1: Carcase and Dividers

2259 days ago by Dorje | 24 comments »

I’ve had the urge to just make something small for some time now…I’ve been working on a bed with what little shop time I have, and haven’t had much time for other stuff. I wanted one of those projects that you could just take the materials at hand and go for it. Also, something that wouldn’t take forever to build and would give some (relatively) instant gratification. I had some scrap cedar, fir, poplar, and walnut that’ll be used in this little box/case. ...

French cleat garage storage system #2: Let's hang up some planes

1669 days ago by jeffreythree | 8 comments »

I ‘had’ to try hanging something on the french cleat portion already up; so I picked my Stanley #6, 7, and 8 because they have stayed so buried I have not cleaned them up for use. I first picked out some likely lumber, a little eastern red cedar shorts from my mill, some left over 1/8” ply for a bottom, and an oak cleat from the left over pile. I ripped the cedar down to 1-1/4” for the trays. There was so much tension in the wood it literally cracked apart as...

Do birds kiss?

1484 days ago by TopamaxSurvivor | 11 comments »

I have been getting ready to make some visual bird houses for my grand kids. They will have a red window in the back for viewing. They can be hung in front of the kids bedroom windows so they can watch all the action of the birdlings. Both our kids have split entry houses so the bedrooms are plenty high enough off the ground. I am using some free cedar fencing cutoffs. They will not be finished, just natural. I am going to pre-drill some nail holes so the kids can nail them together t...
