My older brother loves water sports. Lately he has taken up SUP (standup paddleboarding) because it is easier on old geezers like himself. I say that with the greatest respect….I hope I can be half as active as he is when I’m 60+. It is basically a very large surf board with a paddle and (you gueesed it) you stand up the whole time. It’s great exercise, easier to catch waves and if no waves…just fun to paddle. If you are interested my brother has a great blog for begin...

For all of you cabinet builders on this site, my hat is off to you! I never fully realized the work that is involved in making a cabinet and how even the smallest mistakes can compound so very quickly…
Right before Christmas I posted this blog asking for input on plans for a tool cabinet. Well, I took all the advice I received and have been furiously building over the holidays.
Here is where I stand—I have completed the actual “cabinet” portion of the project. ...

I’ve had the urge to just make something small for some time now…I’ve been working on a bed with what little shop time I have, and haven’t had much time for other stuff. I wanted one of those projects that you could just take the materials at hand and go for it.
Also, something that wouldn’t take forever to build and would give some (relatively) instant gratification.
I had some scrap cedar, fir, poplar, and walnut that’ll be used in this little box/case. ...

I had a little bit of time this afternoon to work on the little case…
I keyed the miters with walnut:
Glued up the dividers:
and, cut out the all the drawer parts:
I’ve got drawer bottom stock prepared from the first day (in the background of the photo above), so my next step will be to cut the joinery for the drawers. And, since this is supposed to be a quick and dirty project, I’m going to rout the drawers with a drawer lock bit. Like this:

James Peters enjoys what he does. Waking up every morning and working in his woodshop in the back of his house is the “bees knees” as James says. Once there, he makes custom acoustic guitars. He is, as it’s called, a luthier based in Springfield, TN. After moving to Nashville in 1989 and having some success in the country music songwriting industry, a friend asked James to repair his guitar. It was after that experience that he realized it would be easier &mdas...

I am an “Urban Logger”. I only mill trees from town. There is a reason for this. I am a tree hugger (yea really) Not the stereotype, insert your own mental picture here, that have given that title a negative connotation. BUT, I do love trees. I think they are magnificent. I know this sounds weird from a guy that runs a sawmill, you would think I just feel they are for me to chop down and mill and make money from. It’s not like that at all . I started sawmilling just to keep ...

I completed the other paddle this weekend. Both are all done exept for the finishing. I’ve decided against doing any fiberglassing. I’m planning on using the West Systems epoxy with the 207 hardener and then 3 coats of Epifanes varnish. I’m going to wait for the warmer drier weather later in the week. I’ve noticed big differences in the epoxy finish depending on the weather.
I didn’t take as many pictures of the process on this one…basically the same as ...

OK, this is just plain sad…
I KNOW I’m not the best of the best (yet) but I have to say it was mighty insulting that my entry in the “Not Just Any Box” contest received fewer points than Hap’s entry, “Cedar”. I mean, come on! It’s a picture of a LOG!
Let’s compare:
Does it have a lid?TD – YesHap – Nooooo…
Is it boxy?TD – YesHap – Not so much
Can you store items in it?TD – YesHap – ...

I’ve decided I really like making paddles. Very creative outlet and not only is it artistically challenging but the dynamics of the blade design are really interesting as well.
I’ve got 5 paddles in the works at the moment but #3 is different from my earlier ones. Straight shaft, teardrop, no laminations, dovetail. I added some geometric woodburning, somewhat primitive looking. It also has a channel, kind of the reverse of a dihedral feeding into the dovetail.
Paddle #3
I...

A couple of pictures of glueing up the edges from last night and then todays lunch break. I didn’t even eat I want to finish this so bad.
Spooky night operation.
Edges glued up
Lunch break today.
The drawknife lets me remove material fast. Gotta be careful though, real easy to take too much.
It also can take a almost paper thin shaving.
After some sanding
and some more….the back
This little 3M sanding pad with their new sandpaper works really well.
I cam...
