Standup Paddleboard Paddles #2: Shaping the blade

480 days ago by Bob Babcock | 10 comments »

A couple of pictures of glueing up the edges from last night and then todays lunch break. I didn’t even eat I want to finish this so bad. Spooky night operation. Edges glued up Lunch break today. The drawknife lets me remove material fast. Gotta be careful though, real easy to take too much. It also can take a almost paper thin shaving. After some sanding and some more….the back This little 3M sanding pad with their new sandpaper works really well. I cam...

Standup Paddleboard Paddles #1: What the heck is a Standup Paddleboard?

482 days ago by Bob Babcock | 14 comments »

My older brother loves water sports. Lately he has taken up SUP (standup paddleboarding) because it is easier on old geezers like himself. I say that with the greatest respect….I hope I can be half as active as he is when I’m 60+. It is basically a very large surf board with a paddle and (you gueesed it) you stand up the whole time. It’s great exercise, easier to catch waves and if no waves…just fun to paddle. If you are interested my brother has a great blog for begin...

Summer Challenge 2007 - A Bridge Too Short #2: Resawing Cedar

494 days ago by Bob Babcock | 9 comments »

I finally got started on cutting the planks for the bridge. I hope I can get this done in time to submit as my entry. I may have to submit some previous projects if I don’t get finished this weekend. I bought my son-in-law this Dewalt contractors saw last weekend as a gift for helping me install all new windows in the house. I like it so much I’m going to put one on my birthday/christmas/fathers day gift list ( all tools on that list as you can imagine) Very light, powerful, ni...

Outdoor "Coffee" Table #1: Just an idea

509 days ago by Dorje | 14 comments »

We need a low outdoor table for drinks and food, etc., Something that would tie into the design of the chairs that we already have. My first inclination is to do this table in Western Red cedar (it’s sort of the default everything-outdoor-wood around here), but I keep thinking it would nice to try something else. Again, this is another project that I intend to do this summer, but I do have to side the house, and seal and paint it if I’m lucky (before the rains come again and ...

Anyone want Cedar Wood?

528 days ago by Mark A. DeCou | 2 comments »

The other day I posted a couple of projects where I used some reddish-white wood, that we around here call “Cedar.” I don’t know what the species name is, some say Western Red, some Say Eastern Red, so I don’t know for sure. I received enough interest on the wood type from commenters to the project and emails,, that I did some checking around, and I found a local source for this red/white cedar wood with the aromatic smell if anyone is interested in it. It would c...

Prospecting for Wood #4: Last Night's Dumpster Dive

541 days ago by Paul | 6 comments »

Went for a walk with my wife last night. I have been eyeing this large dumpster behind an old house in our neighborhood for the last few days. I’m not sure whether they’re preparing the house for demolition, remodeling or moving, but the dumpster was full. I took a closer peek in the dumpster last night and went back with the van after we got home. Click the thumbnail pic for a larger view. I guess they tore out a cedar lined closet in the house. I now have enough 3&...

Serving Tray #1: The Beginning

543 days ago by MsDebbieP | 14 comments »

My new DowelMax arrived last week (see Mot's discussions re: the tool) but I haven’t had time or I haven’t made the time to try it out – until today. Why haven’t I tried it yet? Well I think I have to blame Tom’s daughter for this one—boy, if she can do it and I mess it up… oh my self-esteem will suffer!! haha Anyway, I have a birthday party to attend this Saturday and I want to make a gift rather than buying something. My goal is to make a gard...

Thorsen Table Challenge #1: It's a start

587 days ago by roundabout22 | 5 comments »

The whole reason I joined Lumberjocks was because I wanted to get some information about the Thorsen Table Challenge. After spending countless hours here I decided I better at least attempt a table. SWMBO said that I could only build a table if the wood choice matched the bedroom furniture (The Wife’s Dresser). So sorry Obi, but it is going to be made out of pine. I decided to add some Cedar for a contrasting wood Just to do something different I went with a brick laid patt...
