I did not have a specific pattern for this, rather I used several and kind of drew from them. That makes this project one of my favorites, as truth is I cannot even draw a stick man correctly. The piece of pine I used for the main portion of this had a hint of blue in it so I thought it appropriate to use for my blue heron. Gee I must have been a genius to figure out that one huh? Seriously though I have been told that this kind of pine is called blue pine, and I have always wondered if th...

I found the pattern to these horses in a stained glass pattern book of which I know longer have so I cannot give credit. If anyone out there in cyberspace knows who did this pattern I would really like to know so that I can give credit. Stain glass patterns are a nice alternative to regular wood patterns and usually quite easier.

Today Dec 1, 2007 was the toy giveaway day for the Mason-Dixon Woodworkers Club Toy Workshop.
We make toys all year long and we pass them out on the first Sat in December. This is the 13 yr that it has been done. It’s grown is scope but we are still looking for people that want to volunteer to make toys. We meet on every Wednesday of the year. Our first day for the 2008 toy making in this coming Wednesday.
We had about 18 charities that showed up today. We had over 1200 toys to di...

I’ve decided I really like making paddles. Very creative outlet and not only is it artistically challenging but the dynamics of the blade design are really interesting as well.
I’ve got 5 paddles in the works at the moment but #3 is different from my earlier ones. Straight shaft, teardrop, no laminations, dovetail. I added some geometric woodburning, somewhat primitive looking. It also has a channel, kind of the reverse of a dihedral feeding into the dovetail.
Paddle #3
I...

Apparently, pens are in high demand. I made a Cigar Pen for a colleague, who told me that his wife wanted it for her own. I made the Cedar Cigar pen in my Projects page for her as a gift, but it looks like I’ve started a war of the sexes. Here’s a note from my colleague:
I start this by mentioning that me and my wife have always maintained the position of “What’s mine is yours and what’s yours is mine”. For many years this has been a seamless arrangement without incident unt...

The first in a, likely, long educational series, teaching by example. Poor example. Deliberately. If we don’t try (and fail quick) we may never learn how to proceed. Or reasons why the tried and true, really is.
Several months back (or more) I saw some experimental turnings of Hilary Pfeifer's made from several layers of perforated hardboard, laminated into a block with woodglue. Inspired (and knowing that common wood glue would be brutal to keeping your chisels sharp) I took a bunch...

This was an interesting article on Western Red Cedar.
Funny thing is, I live in California and the local lumber yards do not carry Western Red Cedar. They do carry Cedar for fencing, but nothing else. And they wonder why I specifically want Western Red Cedar to build outdoor furniture. Oh well, maybe I will find a source yet.

We should be paddling these next weekend at Lime Rock . My brother is going to be racing over the weekend in his Peyote MKII in the Rolex Vintage Festival. It should be a great time.
Here are the finished paddles….actually I still need to varnish them but they shouldn’t change much. The one on the right is the 2nd one. Much lighter than the 1st and likely to be the one my brother chooses.
Blade fronts…I really like #2…I hope it performs well with the rolled edge....

I completed the other paddle this weekend. Both are all done exept for the finishing. I’ve decided against doing any fiberglassing. I’m planning on using the West Systems epoxy with the 207 hardener and then 3 coats of Epifanes varnish. I’m going to wait for the warmer drier weather later in the week. I’ve noticed big differences in the epoxy finish depending on the weather.
I didn’t take as many pictures of the process on this one…basically the same as ...

Is it just me or are knots in cedar strip canoes really cool. I think clear cedar is overrated. Because the hull is encased in fiberglass, the knots shouldn’t be an issue when it comes to hull strenth. But why doesn’t anyone make canoes with knots. As for me and my house, we will make knotty canoes.
