Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also.
I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know.
It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....

OK, this is just plain sad…
I KNOW I’m not the best of the best (yet) but I have to say it was mighty insulting that my entry in the “Not Just Any Box” contest received fewer points than Hap’s entry, “Cedar”. I mean, come on! It’s a picture of a LOG!
Let’s compare:
Does it have a lid?TD – YesHap – Nooooo…
Is it boxy?TD – YesHap – Not so much
Can you store items in it?TD – YesHap – ...

I’ve had the urge to just make something small for some time now…I’ve been working on a bed with what little shop time I have, and haven’t had much time for other stuff. I wanted one of those projects that you could just take the materials at hand and go for it.
Also, something that wouldn’t take forever to build and would give some (relatively) instant gratification.
I had some scrap cedar, fir, poplar, and walnut that’ll be used in this little box/case. ...

Hey everyone,
I was asked by a few of you from my blog “How to find legal burls” “once I get them how do I cut the burls”?
Well I just made a short vidio on how I cut to the burl in the context of a bowl or hollow form blank.
Please coment and add if I don’t cover it well. If you not want to go thru the hassle of finding and cutting your own you can alway buy from me. LOLThanksGreg
Thanks Todd on the tip for getting the video on this post.

I thought I would try my hand at writing a blog here. This is a totally different way for me as far as patterns go. I am used to a pattern that is on a sheet of paper the size the object will be when done. and then you make copies and cut out the pieces of the paper pattern and place them on your wood. This pattern came like this. One sheet of paper NOT actual size. Then the pattern itself IS in pieces you need at the size they are suppose to be. When I first started this, a couple days ago, I ...

I am an “Urban Logger”. I only mill trees from town. There is a reason for this. I am a tree hugger (yea really) Not the stereotype, insert your own mental picture here, that have given that title a negative connotation. BUT, I do love trees. I think they are magnificent. I know this sounds weird from a guy that runs a sawmill, you would think I just feel they are for me to chop down and mill and make money from. It’s not like that at all . I started sawmilling just to keep ...

About a year ago, my grandfather approached me about building a project with him in his shop. He had done this many times before, but the arrogant kid/teenager/college student never had the time. However, this time I jumped at the idea. I don’t know if it was the timing, the project, etc… but everything seemed to work out.
To understand the importance of this, you have to understand that my family is not one of those “close-knit” family units. Everybody is divorced (some a couple of times)...

Those of you who know me know that I’m always on the lookout for wood (not). I’ve got more lumber than I’ll ever use in my lifetime.
But I’ve been on the lookout for some Aromatic Red Cedar. I saw a log at an acquaintance home and I told him to cut it up. He owns a Woodmizer.
I went to pick up the wood today. He also cut up a few other cedar logs at the same time so he probably had 1000 bd ft cut.
I picked up 6 1X10 – 6’, 6 1X6- 8’, 6 1×...

I had some time in the evening to continue on my little case…
I was able to get the drawer lock joints cut on the four little drawers. Fortunately, I set this up the other day. Without instructions, it took me a little longer than it probably should have. Once you dial in the height for a good fit, it’s all in the fence adjustment. Pretty decent little machine joint, that’ll be a lot faster to perform the next time:
Next up, I cut the grooves for the bottoms (on the ...

For all of you cabinet builders on this site, my hat is off to you! I never fully realized the work that is involved in making a cabinet and how even the smallest mistakes can compound so very quickly…
Right before Christmas I posted this blog asking for input on plans for a tool cabinet. Well, I took all the advice I received and have been furiously building over the holidays.
Here is where I stand—I have completed the actual “cabinet” portion of the project. ...
