Sharing Photos of a "Great Celebration" Mass Service; From the Church Furniture Commission Project

292 days ago by Mark DeCou | 19 comments »

I had decided to spend the month of November not posting to lumberjocks, so that I could get some work done in the shop. But, I was given some good news today, and given the link to the photos I will show below, so I decided to “speak” again. So, for the good news: the St. Anthony Church is ready for me to design and quote a Baptismal Font to match the other furniture in the church. So, I will be brainstorming some ideas and developing a quote. I was told that this project would be comi...

Ms Debbie P's 2007 Shop Tour and Inspection #8: Tuesdays With Mark Decou

366 days ago by Douglas Bordner | 14 comments »

This week’s visit is to the shop of Mark Decou in the scenic Flint Hills of Kansas. I grew up in Kansas, and fished and hunted on “the old home place” not far from Mark’s neck of the woods. Big sky, broad vistas, rolling prairie hills with flint and limestone outcrops, farmsteads with Osage Orange hedgerows and babbling creeks. Plenty of serene space to contemplate the meaning of one’s existence. And contemplative is a natural adjective for Mark. He has done m...

4th (Final) Update on the St. Anthony Hymn Number Board

390 days ago by Mark DeCou | 10 comments »

This week, I’ve been finishing up the Hymn Number Board for the St. Anthony Catholic church in Strong City, KS. Final assembly, glue, number plate holders, stain, finish, and gold-powder painting, and it is all finished now, ready for delivery to the church on Saturday. This is my Original Design, and it looks nothing like anything I have seen before, although it has design elements of things I have built in the past. I built it to match the other furnishings of the St. Anthony chu...

3rd Update on the Hymn Number Stand

395 days ago by Mark DeCou | 9 comments »

I had a nice weekend. Saturday I worked with a local cabinet maker helping him catch up on his schedule. We are nearly finished with the 3rd kitchen cabinet job, and then he will be caught up. I think I have worked about 8-9 days this summer with him on Saturdays. Sunday was relaxing, went to church and then home with the family, and a nap. A nap makes a lot of things better for some reason (not to take anything away from church). Today, Monday, I have the Hymn Number Board just abo...

2nd Update on the Church Hymn Number Board Commission Project

401 days ago by Mark DeCou | 11 comments »

Today, Monday, I took photos of what I have accomplished on my Hymn Number Board that I am building for the St. Anthony Church in Strong City, KS. On one hand, it seems like I made a lot of progress since my last blog late last week, but when I look back over the photos tonight, I can see that the number of hours it takes me to do this tedious work is mounting. I started the project with the previous blog: http://lumberjocks.com/jocks/decoustudio/blog/1508 Also, since I had enough in...

Commissioned Church Side Altars Complete!

477 days ago by Mark DeCou | 25 comments »

I am so excited this morning. Why you ask? I’m complete with the St. Anthony Church Side Altar commission project. I have more work to do on other pieces for the church by the end of the month. So, there isn’t much time to take a breath yet, but the completion of the Side Altars is a huge milestone for me, and my woodworking career. To be honest, there were some times that I wondered if I would ever get all of the details of these Altars complete. Total working time is a...
