Tip of the day! Use a push stick!

01-17-2013 02:59 PM by OregonBurls | 30 comments »

THE ART OF NOT TAKING A TRIP TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM!Yesterday I awoke out of my daze of admiring a quilted maple block with a shocking sensation and blood everywhere. The dull blade on my bandsaw did not help and using my hands to push the beautiful block through didn’t help either. Simple word of advise which many of you can attest too. Keep your tools sharp and use a push stick! Lets say it all together now! Keep your tools sharp and use a push stick!Keep your tools sharp and ...

Get Glue off Whiteside Router Bit

01-13-2013 05:28 PM by rockinmichael | 3 comments »

My new 1.5 inch flush trim router bit from Whiteside Router bits was purchased with a generous amount of glue covering it (to prevent rust, and from cutting yourself). How might I get this glue off?

The Perfect Leather Washer

12-28-2012 12:17 AM by hhhopks | 9 comments »

I was making replacement handles for my chisels. I tried the sockets and tang versions with good results. I got some old chisel handles that had leather washers at the other end. I was curious if I could make them too. I did the usual searches and had found great information. Since several LJ members is curious about the how they were cut, I have decided that I’ll post the process here. How the leather washers look really desn’t matter. It is an intermediate step of the chisel handle...

Making a violin....maybe #2: Day Two, glue, making ribs, and blocks.

12-12-2012 07:57 AM by Ted78 | 2 comments »

With some great advice from some LJ members I cooked up some Knox gelatin glue to put the back together. I mixed up one packet of gelatine with some water in a little glass jar and stuck that jar in the crock pot with a few inches of water in the bottom. Then I brushed in onto the to the two halves and rubbed them against each other while sitting on a flat surface, in this case the bed of my jointer. (My bench isn’t very flat, and I don’t think the glue will stick to the ...

Checkerboard Project #5: Custom Carved Checkers Completed!

12-05-2012 04:23 AM by Retsof | 3 comments »

After several hours of carving with my Dremel tool over the last two days, I completed the custom checkers for this project. This was my first attempt at wood carving and with 48 sides to carve, it was a bit tedious, but not too difficult. My skills improved a good deal by day two and I took some extra time to go back over the first day’s checkers and make sure they were all pretty consistent. I took some video of the carving process to post as a separate blog entry once I have...

Checkerboard Project #4: Jiggidy Jig Day

12-03-2012 06:25 AM by Retsof | 1 comment »

I got side tracked and didn’t accomplish any of the goals that I set for today. The day wasn’t a total loss though. I made a batch of chili and I watched a few videos on dovetail joints and marked up my boards. I need to clear space on my bench to do the cutting, so that was my excuse for not starting on them until I finish gluing up the top. Out in the garage, I glued up a few more rows and while I was waiting for the glue to dry, I started thinking about the game pieces th...

My New (old) Lathe

11-22-2012 10:29 PM by milbert | 7 comments »

With a lot of free time on my hands these days I decided to move into the dangerous and addictive land of woodturning. I’ve been dying to get a lathe now for about 3 years and trolling Craigslist (I’m on a college budget). I finally found a great deal on an old Craftsman so I decided to jump on it! After I got it, I spent a couple hours cleaning and making sure everything moved like it was supposed to. I ran into one problem which was the motor has a slight bend in the shaf...

The Maloof Library Series #14: Sculpted Dining Chair Arm Technique

11-20-2012 12:51 PM by ScottMorrison | 5 comments »

Here is a great little video showing the steps involved on how to make one of the arms for my new Template Project: “Building a Sculpted Dining Chair.” You can see that it is a very useful little trick. I hope you find this clip entertaining (it sure was fun making it). (The music is a real “toe tapper”)... Enjoy!
