It’s been a while since I posted my last update on this project and I’ve made a lot of progress. Once I got the basic shaping and sanding done, I had to stop until I found the net bags that I wanted to use on the frames. As of this week, I have everything I need to finish the nets, so here are some more photos to show you what I’ve done so far: Here is net #2 after bending, but before glue up. This photo gives a good look at how I pegged my circles to the melamine ba...
Didn’t know whether to post here in this blog or in the walnut tv stand blog. So here it is. Found I had to tweak my router planer a bit more in order for it to work as well as I wanted it to work. The slabs I’m doing right now were too long for the regular planer, so had to get out the really long rails once again. Problem with the setup I had already used was the sled didn’t ride the rails as nice or as easy as I’d hoped they would, even with using some wheels/cas...
I recently started a major chair-building project and thought it might be fun to document the process as a series of blog entries. So, here we go… My BackgroundI started woodworking in seventh-grade woodshop about 38 years ago. I began pursuing this wonderful hobby in earnest in 1986 and was fortunate to catch the wave of woodworking information put out by magazines such as Woodsmith, Fine Woodworking, and American Woodworker. I collected a significant personal library of books and...
A while back my mother-in-law mentioned needing a few wooden spoons. She prefers wood utensils when making goodies like chicken & dumplings. The reason being, wooden spoons won’t tear the dumpling as much as metal or hard plastic. I made a couple spoons in early summer and didn’t care much for it but I decided to give it another try.. just for her cause she’s awesome. We had a family reunion coming up and she always makes a huge batch of dumplings so I knew she would want something with a...

1. Beginning of the project… getting the 26 oak boards identical and laid out and glued up. 2. After a few hours of carving and shaping, with the star field cut (to scale of the overall dimensions). Still no glue-up at this time… Used my angle grinder with King Arthur and Arbortech wheels… 3. Used clear stain with dye added… took a few coats to get what I was wanting but it turned out well. 4. Glue up completed nothing left but the field of stars and a fin...

Many times when we hear of two people having ‘differences’ we think it is a bad thing. The mere term brings to mind visions of conflict and discontent. But when looking at things from another perspective, perhaps as an artist or creative person, differences are not viewed as something negative, but rather sought after in order to provide value through uniqueness and individuality. The more unique they are, the higher the value. I think that it is interesting that a word woul...
