HEAR YE, HEAR YE!! Yes, Virginia we now have definitive proof that cavemen did enjoy scooping coffee! In fact cromagnun man (and woman) were the precursor to modern day Starbucks. In response to my recent posting of a neanderthal period coffee scoop, that was presented alongside a lovely model crafted by my L/J friend Jerry W, it was suggested that we begin an archelogical study, a challenge or showcase if you will of scoops and spoons. Because it was my shamelessly (or was it shamefacedl...
Hi Everyone, this is my first time trying to do a blog. So please bear with me, I’ll do my best!I have had a lot of request to do a blog about my rings, I do 2 kinds of rings. The Lamination style and the Bentwood style, this blog is on the Lamination style. This ring is made out of Cocobolo, Brass and has a Mother- of-Pearl inlay. I start out with 3 thin squares of Cocobolo, about a 1.5”, I have a thin sheet of brass that I cut about the same size as the wood. I lay them out to o...
Lesson 5: Chip Carving Square #1In this lesson you will apply what you learned in Lesson 4. This first quilt square is made up entirely of three corner chips. Here’s the pattern: Right-click on the image and select “Save Image As” and save it to your hard drive.I hope the pattern size will remain the same so you can transfer it directly to your square. If you need to resize the image, this can be done with a photo editor or in Word after inserting the picture. Practi...
There are 8 fluted columns to this bedroom set. The columns were turned on our “Legacy” Ornamental Milling Machine, by one of our shop craftsman, Dennis Nygard. I’m carving the 64 acanthus leaf’s by hand with “Pfeil” carving knifes and a small brass mallet. It’s easer to cut the solid cherry by lightly taping with a small mallet. Each leaf takes about 3 hours per leaf. Plus set up time and drawing time, which takes about 2 hours. So, each spindl...
Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also. I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know. It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....
It’s about time! We finally got a good job with a lot of carving. It’s a three piece bedroom set. The style is close to the early Victorian Period. Their are 4 Scroll Acanthus leaf’s that I designed, two that go on the bed and two that go on the dresser. Now I am starting on the 8 turned legs with acanthus leaf carvings on them. All the carvings are out of solid cherry. Here are 33 pictures, on how to carve this type of “Architectural Ornament onlay application̶...
THE ART OF NOT TAKING A TRIP TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM!Yesterday I awoke out of my daze of admiring a quilted maple block with a shocking sensation and blood everywhere. The dull blade on my bandsaw did not help and using my hands to push the beautiful block through didn’t help either. Simple word of advise which many of you can attest too. Keep your tools sharp and use a push stick! Lets say it all together now! Keep your tools sharp and use a push stick!Keep your tools sharp and ...

I’m hoping to get some time today to do some more chip carving. That and sand a broken handplane knob for glue up. Between work and the leg, I am getting behind on the woodworking power curve. I signed up for a introductory relief carving class at Woodcraft and purchased a basic set of Ashley Iles (Lincoln Set) carving chisels. I can see this is going to be a money sink similar to wood turning. I have a flexcut strop, waterstone for my bench planes, worksharp, etc. But figur...
