Large Carved Frame #1: Background

337 days ago by Rex B | 1 comment »

This project is a few months old, but I’m just now getting around to writing this blog. I came up with a novel method of carving intricate shapes with a router, and I thought it was worth sharing. I’m probably not the first to come up with this technique, but I came up with it on my own without really seeing it anywhere else. The background: My wife wanted to make a large chalkboard to hang in our dining area, so I cut a large piece of cheap hardboard (30” square) and we ...

Redwood Table #2: Staining

533 days ago by WoodenSoldier | 2 comments »

After some advice from other wise lumberjocks I decided to flatten the top by sanding it with my belt sander instead of trying to pull it flat with angle iron. It still has a very slight sag in the middle but it’s hardly noticeable and won’t affect the function of the table. I doubt the customer will ever notice unless they pour a glass of water into the middle of the table to see which direction it goes. I sanded it to 220 and then went back and filled a couple small bubbles...

Checkerboard Project #5: Custom Carved Checkers Completed!

595 days ago by Retsof | 3 comments »

After several hours of carving with my Dremel tool over the last two days, I completed the custom checkers for this project. This was my first attempt at wood carving and with 48 sides to carve, it was a bit tedious, but not too difficult. My skills improved a good deal by day two and I took some extra time to go back over the first day’s checkers and make sure they were all pretty consistent. I took some video of the carving process to post as a separate blog entry once I have...

hand carved redwood bench #4: a smidgen of progress

1793 days ago by kolwdwrkr | 10 comments »

Well we were able to put about 6 more hours into the bench project this weekend. The display cabinets have been consuming our free time, but I’ve decided to stop working on it at 5 and work from 5 to 8 on the bench. We still need to sand it all, screw it all together and shape the arm rests. It’s just sitting there and the mortises are what’s holding it together. I put the seat slats down onto it so I could test the comfort. I need to shape the front slat and radious al...

I have another design I’m working on the concept sketch for with an “Abraham Lincoln Bust Top” walking cane, and he’s deceased, and so that can not be determined as “politics”, just art.
