 The Straightedge (video) #1: Working with MelamineThis is a re-edit of the video that got me started doing videos. Unfortunately I knew very little about shooting and editing video at the time. In fact, I shot the video with a web cam, so the video quality is poor in parts. The re-edit gives it a nice face lift, but perhaps in the future, when I run low on topics, I can re-shoot the video. Workbenches and Work Surfaces #1: Standard WorkbenchI have been in the process (for a few months now) of building a general purpose workbench.I work on the computer and usually “play” on the computer so I have hard time prying myself off it and getting anything done. In retrospect, I wish I had followed their plan exactly and used a solid core door ... Getting Clean Cuts in MelamineMelamine is notorious for chipping out when cutting. In this video I share my tools and techniques for creating clean cuts on both sides of melamine. The blade I use in the video is a Freud LU97R010. It makes the cut on the back side as clean as on the top side. The images of the cuts in the video are of the backside of the material where chip-out tends to occur. Craftsman Bungalow Restoration #21: Custom Refrigerator Panels 1The Hole in My KitchenFor the past two years we have lived with a hole in the wall of the kitchen where the fridge was. I was going to turn this into a pantry, but we decided to put the fridge back in. We found a fridge that would accept custom panels. It is 36” wide. and only 24” deep to the doors.We had to cut back one stud in the wall to accommodate the depth and reinforce the floor for the weight, but the hole/nook is ready for the fridge. We had to take this picture several times to get a shot where I wasn’t making the angry woodworker face. My poor little 10 amp Black and Decker circular saw was not cutting it. Usually I spend a few hours pulling nails, but a I am getting impatient and there were s... Cabinet Progress #16: Cabinet 2: Last Drawer StandingTilt Outs I started the tilt outs optimisticaly. I began by making filler strips to bring the hinges flush to the face frame. Setting the hinge. After lots of adjusting (3 hours) I got the drawer to fit reasonably well. The weird thing about these hinges is that they dont just tilt. They kind of tilt, slide down, and then push in. They are more intended for overlay applications and really should have been installed prior to the cabinet installation. I had to cut down the drawer front...  Bar TopsI’m finding out the hard way, that in order to become a good finisher I need to be an even better refinisher!This has been a long road. I started out using a brush-on spar varnish and quickly realized that there had to be a better way. Now, there is nothing wrong with a brush-on finish except that a bar top is highly visible area and can show a lot of imperfections. Spray-on finishes are always going to give you the best finish.
