cabinetry #1: Custom table for boutique women's clothing store

285 days ago by JMB | 2 comments »

This is a quick commission I landed last week. The gal asked me to finish it asap so she can open up her new store. Cabinetry is one of those wonderful things which is really easy to do when you’re properly setup, and make a lot of money doing it. I’m not gouging her, but I’m definitely making my minimum hourly on this project. The design is simple enough. Divided storage areas for a reciept printer, wrapping paper, shopping bags, etc. The larger of the two lower left cub...

Hand Tools Cabinet #3: All aboard the Planes

286 days ago by PurpLev | 9 comments »

I saw this FWW Complete Illustrator Guide to Woodworking, and while I found most of the book to be mediocre (although a nice reference book when you’re starting woodworking) I did pick up a couple of cool ideas from it… then again, it might have been from a different book…lol so I finally mounted my (until now just laying there) hand planes in the cabinet. The shelves are shaped to the profile of each handplane for full support, the shelf has a small ‘step’ (1...

#1 Cabinet Components mics_54

370 days ago by DaveR | 9 comments »

mics54 wrote:”I am really going to have to change the way I constructed/manipulated component models in order to use the cut list. Before, in v6 I would import a basic wall cabinet. explode it, stretch it to width desired, make it a group and place it in the model. Now once it is exploded I would have to recreate the cabinet into seperate components in oder for the cutlist application to recognise the parts. Maybe I don’t know the proper methods of resizing models …or am I misunderstand...

and then it becomes....... #5: Padauk

380 days ago by kolwdwrkr | 12 comments »

Well after I returned to the shop with my padauk from Austin hardware and lumber, I cut the material down to sizes close to what I was going to work with and ran them on edge over the jointer. After getting the edges straight and true I glued them up into planks and let them dry. I pulled them from the clamps and ran them through the drum sander. Then cut them to final width then length. I then set up my leigh jig and routed the dovetails and wha la the basic box stands. In these picks...

and then it becomes....... #4: Austin

386 days ago by kolwdwrkr | 6 comments »

Well in my little world things change on a regular basis. As I said before I don’t make drawings, and if I do it’s because the project is well on it’s way and I’m caught between liking it and not. So I draw it to see it. Normally I make changes from that point. Well there’s been a change in this project. I seemed to have found myself at Austin Hardwoods today looking to purchase some more Bubinga. Well as fate would have it there was a pile of Padauk next t...

Norms Router Cabinet #4: Bit Tray's and Cabinet Door are Done - well almost

423 days ago by sIKE | 9 comments »

Worked on this last weekend and got back on it today. When I worked on it Sunday getting the door in place I quickly realized that a previous mistake, the left inside panel for the tray cabinet was key stoned with the top tilting in. This left a major gap on the right hand side of the door. The case was glued and brad nailed so I was very afraid to take it back apart to fix it in the first place. So I thought about it all week while in Nebraska and came up with how to fix it. It worked out...

The Non-Electric Chair #8: The Toolchest (Part 1)

425 days ago by lethentymill | 1 comment »

“Maybe he was a pattern maker”. Alexander, my oldest son, is an engineer and was looking at the collection of gouge chisels as I put their tray back in the chest. I was wondering why Mr Wake had so many gouge chisels and whether that was a clue to his job. All the tools in this chest are marked “C Wake” but I know nothing else about him, except for what I can guess from the chest and its contents. “You just want to show off your collection of tools, that’s why you’re doing these arti...

Tool thoughts #8: Storage cabinet for the shop

450 days ago by NedB | 4 comments »

Now I’m all for building my own cabinetry, but this one will be very tough to beat. It’s a cabinet any computer type who used to sit at a ‘terminal’ instead of a PC will recognize. Originally purposed to store data reel to reel tapes, I’m going to use it to store most of my tailed and battery op tools, along with a shelf for fasteners, etc… It measures a whopping 7’ 1/2” tall, 36” wide and 18 1.2 ” deep. The tambour door should keep ...

Leaving My First Real Workshop

461 days ago by Eric | 8 comments »

We’re moving in about 10 days to a different part of the country. Tomorrow the movers come to haul off some of our belongings. We’re mailing what we can, as it’s much cheaper, but some things (like a TV) are best moved by professionals. Our stuff is traveling by boat and should arrive about a week or so after we get there. Today I had to dismantle my workshop and pack everything up. It was fun in a way, as this was my first real workshop and I had some good times here. I&...

Shop #1: Shop tool cabinet

465 days ago by clasher | 9 comments »

My first try at a wall cabinet for my shop. The case is constructed using maple with simple dado and rabbet joints. The door frame is maple and the panels are hardboard. I still need to add some holders for the rest of my hand tools. But I did just get around to routing the pulls.
