Shop done. Let's build something #5: more progress on the corner cabinet

263 days ago by Craftsman on the lake | 7 comments »

Today I managed to get the second door glued up, the top glued up, and the frame and doors prepped for finishing with scraper, sandpaper, and tack cloth. Both doors now done Scraping the cabinet frame. Notice the nice angle my newfangled bench can position the frame clamped in. I jointed and glued the two pieces that will make up the top. A cove molding made on the router table This will go against the cabinet under the top overhang.

Shop done. Let's build something #4: Doors made!

264 days ago by Craftsman on the lake | 10 comments »

Ok, this was nerve wracking but by measuring everything 30 times I managed to make two doors for the corner cabinet and they seem to have come out okay without any major faux pas. My first raised panel doors. The new bosch router and freud panel bits worked out fine. My homemade router table got it’s first serious use too. Way cool. This is a real rush. Shop done. Let's build something #3: Cabinet shell

265 days ago by Craftsman on the lake | 3 comments »

Again in my series of building a corner cabinet. Today I got the shell built and some shelves made. I used some poplar plywood for the shell (back) and some pine to frame it in behind the oak face. Then I mounted the face to it. It’s 42” tall, 24” wide on the front and each side is about 17” Now all that’s left is the doors, so it will be awhile till my next post. I’ve got to make a test one first in pine as it’s my first time. The cabinet front mo...

Shop done. Let's build something #2: Cabinet framed

266 days ago by Craftsman on the lake | 2 comments »

Ok, My first cabinet. I decided on loose tenon joinery. I discovered a site for a good jig that was easy to make and it seems to work. I’ve got all my oak jointed/cut/and planed. Today I made my mortises with router and jig and glued up the front face of the cabinet. This cabinet will be a corner cabinet 42” tall and about 25 wide on the face. it will have two ogee raised panel doors. Next up will be the back of the cabinet. Not too much of an issue as it won’t show. I’...

Garage Overhead Cabinets #3: Bought Wood -- Where Can I Buy Time?

268 days ago by MyOldGarage | 1 comment »

(Found at http://www.laughingcoyotewoodworks.com/snoozebutton.html) So last weekend we were forecasted to get a big snowstorm here in KC, and this time the forecasters really did know what they were talking about. I anticipated this and went out for a couple of sheets of 3/4 Baltic Birch plywood and two 8 foot 1×8’s. I figured that would give me the materials to keep working through the weekend, because I wouldn’t want my 2wd Dakota out and about in the snow. I got ...

First mortise/tenon #3: freud raised cabinet bits arrive

269 days ago by Craftsman on the lake | 7 comments »

UPS delivered these today along with a new aluminum router plate for the new bosch 2 1/4 hp router combo kit. I hope this all works. The raised panel bit looks quite formidable. Can’t wait for the credit card bill too. On my way to my first door. Scary. I’ll do a review right now: The bosch router and the Freud bits will work great. At these prices they’ve got to so that’s that! Actually, I’m a couple of days away from making them. I’ve got all my rai...

First mortise/tenon #2: Second mortise tenon try

270 days ago by Craftsman on the lake | 10 comments »

The first mortise/tenon was made with junk pine. Someone said that hardwood might give me better results so, I grabbed a couple of pieces of oak and went to work. Here’s the results. I guess practice makes perfect. I should do a half dozen more but I want to make a cabinet with two doors for my sister. Today I jointed, cut, and planed the wood. Next is to take it and make mortises for the front frame. This is all new territory for me.

Concave Chest of Drawers #1: Getting Started

274 days ago by Blake | 17 comments »

I started my next project based on an idea I got from a gorgeous piece of maple that I had laying around which I found when I cleaned out my shop recently. The board was an impulse buy several months ago. I didn’t have a use in mind for it when I bought it. It was 6’ long, almost 10” wide and a little over 1/2” thick. This is the design I came up with for a Concave Chest of Drawers: Some of the Features will change as I start building, especially on the struc...

Garage Overhead Cabinets #1: Planning Makes Perfect?

275 days ago by MyOldGarage | 8 comments »

Ok—as I learned on the garbage can holder, I think I need a bit more planning on my next project. I’ve in the past at least drawn out some sketches and worked from that . . . which is what I did to a certain degree on the trash holder but I didn’t flesh out all the details until I was in (over my head) on the project. Norm Abram I’m not. So on to the next thing which will be some overhead cabinets for in the garage. I’ve always wanted something above the wo...

Shop done. Let's build something #1: Sister wants a corner cabinet

280 days ago by Craftsman on the lake | 2 comments »

The shop is finally done per my other blogs. I’ve just posted my finished new fangled workbench. I fired up the jointer for the first time in 30 years. I don’t have it connected to my new dust sucker yet. I’ve got a pile of shavings on the floor about 24 inches high. Amazing how much shavings are produced. So, tomorrow is a thorough cleaning of the shop. Put it back together after the bench build. My sister just got a new 19” flat panel TV for her kitchen and is cur...
