My Journey As A Creative Designer - Woodworking and Beyond #530: More on Organization - Finally Finished!

11-22-2011 02:28 PM by Sheila Landry (scrollgirl) | 6 comments »

It has been a busy several days and I feel like I have hardly been at the computer at all. I haven’t been making sawdust either, although I have had my share of breathing ‘real dust’ from all the deep, dark places I have been cleaning. What a job this was! Maintaining order in a small working environment is something that takes regular attention. It doesn’t just ‘happen.’ While I think that I am pretty good about keeping up with things, it is times l...

Pricing your work explained!!!

11-22-2011 05:54 AM by ocwoodworker | 3 comments »

Ran across an article in “The Pursuit of Mastery” while out on our ‘date night’ at Barnes & Noble. I think it’s put out by Woodwork magazine. The article is by Richard Jones. I’ve never seen such a great breakdown in how to price a piece of work. A must read for all those crazy enough to “have a go at it”. In it he goes into detail on each of the major steps that we have to account for.-Timber buying-Material charges (based on inherent ...

Everyday life

11-21-2011 12:33 AM by scrollingmom | 3 comments »

I have been thinking about what William wrote on getting overwhelmed with all the projects for the season. About October I start thinking about what I’m going to make and who I’m going to make it for. Then the anticipated weekend that I get started. Everything goes great and by the end of that weekend I’m thinking that if I can keep up this pace I’ll be in good shape and have all that I wanted to make done in good time. I don’t know if I mentioned that I ...

First Craft Show

11-20-2011 02:16 PM by cdbridge39 | 5 comments »

This is was my first craft show that I done. It was a small turn out because there was two more craft shows going on the same weekend. I wasn’t as organizined as I should be, some people were so professional with their displays. I had a variety of items to sell, cutting boards, bowls, keychains, containers, tops, candle holders and a few other items. Well, as far as money I paid all my expenses, gas, space rent and food. I sold 4 cutting/cheese boards, 2 bowls, one keychain and ...

My Journey As A Creative Designer - Woodworking and Beyond #527: The Day In Review

11-19-2011 03:52 PM by Sheila Landry (scrollgirl) | 6 comments »

We had a really good day yesterday and I put a pretty big dent in my holiday list. Although I don’t tend to go overboard on getting gifts. I usually give either something that I made with wood or painted (or both) and people seem to like that. Some of you may remember from last year that one of my biggest passions that I have is cool boxes. This year is no different. We have some places here that really do a great job of stocking cool and unusual boxes for gift giving and keeping...

The Stumpy Nubs Workshop #2: You NEED this mini-cabinet maker's bench! (Part 2)

11-18-2011 09:29 PM by StumpyNubs | 23 comments »

The camera comes back into the Stumpy Nubs Workshop to further document life in a small semi-professional shop… Includes tips on hand cut dovetails, utility chisels, resawing wide boards on the table saw, glue-ups, and a lot more! This is part 2 of Episode 1. It begins with making the CN Box, then continues the “amazing mini-cabinet marker’s bench”. My favorite part is the footage on cutting tiny dovetails by hand, big ones by machine, and huge ones with a hon...

My Journey As A Creative Designer - Woodworking and Beyond #526: On the Road Again . . .

11-18-2011 12:49 PM by Sheila Landry (scrollgirl) | 4 comments »

Today’s post will be brief (for me!) because we are heading out soon. We discovered that there is this huge craft show in Wolfville at Acadia University this weekend and we thought we would scout it out. The link to the show is Here It looks like a really cool event. The booth prices are nearly $300 which is mighty steep, and it is $6 to get in the door, but we hope that means that it will be a lot of quality stuff will be there. This is not a flea market! So we are loading ...

My Journey As A Creative Designer - Woodworking and Beyond #525: Customer Service is Still Alive and Well

11-17-2011 01:14 PM by Sheila Landry (scrollgirl) | 3 comments »

Today I awoke a little earlier than usual and I just didn’t want to go back to sleep. It was one of those days where my head was spinning about all the stuff I wanted to work on. I don’t mind though and I feel like I am ready to get moving a little early and hopefully accomplish a lot today. I pushed the pile pretty good yesterday. I just about finished up a special request from someone that I wanted to get done. I also did some errands and got some business stuff out of the...

My Journey As A Creative Designer - Woodworking and Beyond #524: The Challenge

11-16-2011 01:05 PM by Sheila Landry (scrollgirl) | 6 comments »

I am trying not to feel overwhelmed at this point. Even though it is only Wednesday, it seems like the week was already six days long. To say I have been busy is an understatement, and even though that is a very good thing, I just need to not let it all get to me. I find myself with my head in many different directions again. Magazine, wholesalers, website, painting, etc. It makes me think of the stereotype of a three ringed circus with action going on everywhere. None of this is bad,...

My Journey As A Creative Designer - Woodworking and Beyond #523: Another Opportunity

11-15-2011 03:00 PM by Sheila Landry (scrollgirl) | 8 comments »

It certainly has been a busy week. Everything seems like it is coming together and falling into place. Although I am cautious when using that phrase because it tends to make everything look as if it happened by chance. Those of you who run your own businesses know very well that what many times appears to be ‘luck’ is the result of many hours/days/months and sometimes years of planning. In any case, as crazy as it is, it is fun and enjoyable and very satisfying. I have writ...
