Karson and I were talking on the phone the other night, the topic being burls. He posted pictures of a burl someone left in his driveway. The conversation started with us discussing the best way to cut it to yield the best results. Unfortunately, I have very little knowledge in this area. I do have a friend, Rick Hearne, of Hearne Hardwoods I intend to ask about this process, as I too have a bunch of Cherry burls waiting to be sliced. I mentioned to Karson I saw a very large...

Untrammeled Possibilities and Unexpended Opportunities ....out here is where i was first awakened, awakened to what-where-when and why, awakened to all the un-trammeled possibilities that call my name, awakened to the un-expended opportunities i gather to…. Out here silence starts off as a thing of beauty, but the silence soon passes on to a sound of great talking going on between the different players in this outside play of nature…. ....walking the woods out here is...
Wood and I….Sculpture ….while walking down the isles of life’s design,i was roiled enough to loose my way on a walk-about,the forest and trees no-longer fed this hunger within, and for days becoming years my dreams died as inaesthetic…. ….that was in-deed the hole i dug until i had no-strength dig deeper, what came next was confronting my dragon and refusing his lies any-more,so i went back to the woods fearing to hope and believe what i might find, what i found was that ...

I have recently come accross a black walnut tree that will be dropped in the next couple weeks. It is 19” diameter and 30ft tall. I have a big enough chainsaw and chainsaw mill jig attachment but this is the first time ever attempting milling “green” wood. Anyone have any thoughts or ideas of what to do with it after I have it cut down to rough cut lengths and thicknesses? Also what about drying it out if it needs it? or ? Will it affect any future projects ie: cabinetry, sh...

Waunderings in Ones Back-Yard WoodLot ....crunching the landscape of snowflakes, i soon took a waundering walkabout, where all is silently content within their respected milieu, awaiting those birthing pangs that signal a spectacular spring….. —-were it not for these striving images of imagination, who would be found to come and rescue a soul such as i,since long ago in times of olden beholden begotten wood turnings,i walked right out of sight from those who had long tried to...
We cut this tree down in Feb and just got the video done. We slabed the burl and the logs in to counter top blanks and table blanks. We used my 088 stihl with a 36” and 72” bar. Also for the slabbing used the the 60” lucas mill slabber. The pic below the vid are 12’ slabs of the log. Enjoy and thanks for watchingGregwww.oregonburls.com
