Boys Bedroom (cape cod) #1: Where I am so far

03-11-2014 02:58 AM by Questtut | 2 comments »

So, it is time for my boys to get their own room. They are getting too big for their cribs, and I need to finish that spare bedroom for them so they can have their own space. We have a small cape cod home, originally 4 bedrooms when we moved in, but we made it 3, creating a master bedroom downstairs by combining the 2 smaller rooms. Upstairs there are 2 bedrooms, shaped like a plus symbol, and a small half bath (currently unusable as well). The bath will be a project for another day...

Custom Buffet #1: The Plan

09-29-2013 03:46 AM by MT_Stringer | 0 comments »

What started as a leaking kitchen faucet has turned in to a kitchen remodel. However, I convinced my wife that before tearing up the kitchen, we should build a buffet in the dining room. If all goes well, then we will tackle the kitchen next year. We have been living in this house since July 1987. It has been paid for for several years and all of our kids are grown so it is just me and the missus. The cabinets are vintage 1983 oak but their time has come and gone. I don’t like the...

Home improvement and Repair #2: Built in Home Library and Entertainment Center

10-05-2012 04:49 PM by C_Philhower | 1 comment »

This is a recap of a project I did almost 2 years ago, but wanted to post it online and just got around to it now. My Wife and I have a room in our basement that was partially finished by the previous owners of our home. For the first year and a half that we owned the house the room had a dartboard, an XBox and TV, a futon and about a dozen boxes of books. The walls were already sheet rocked and painted, carpet was installed and there was even an attempt at a tray ceiling with a small ceil...

Built in E-center, Yala #3: It is finished!

12-03-2011 03:13 PM by topcat | 3 comments »

I haven’t done one of these in a while. The build was a bit excruciating. Took 6 days, about 10-12 hrs. per day. Started on the Thurs. before Thanksgiving. That was an easy day. I just ran around getting all of the materials together and did some initial layout work and rough cut the plywood sides. These were full height and were too awkward to move around, so I used a straight edge and my new PC 8902 router to get the edges of the plywood ready for the face frames. Once the first side ...

Built-In Bed #2: SUDO: Make Me a Sandwich

11-10-2010 03:26 AM by Scott R. Turner | 2 comments »

(The Story So Far: Our Hero is constructing a built-in bed for his daughter, with inadequate tools and woodworking experience.) As mentioned in my previous post, one of the challenges of this project is to construct the large, 1 1/2” thick panels that make up the bed sides. These panels are 96” tall and 58” wide, so they cannot be cut from a single sheet of plywood. (The built-in is sized to fit a full size mattress.) They are intended to be 1 1/2” thick, so I h...

Built In Closets #5: Pre Finishing and Sub Assembly

11-08-2010 05:01 PM by SPHinTampa | 2 comments »

Having the bulk of pieces, cut and sanded, I elected to tape and pre finish most of the components. Finishing large projects is a huge challenge for me as I work in a 3 car garage and can not easily spray stuff. Since I was finishing many large panels, I decided to try applying the clear coat with a floor roller. Since I like their other products, I decided to use a Zinsser water based poly. It worked as well as brushing does, however, the coats go on thick and you need to watch the rol...

"Green Room" Built In" #1: Frustrated? Marry an Architect

01-25-2009 11:01 AM by RichClark | 4 comments »

Ok.. here goes We have a big addition to our house.. “the Green Room” Our house is kinda old (build in early 1920’)and the previous owners put a pool in (hoot) and then build a goofie kinda “sun Room” to get to the pooland they painted it a dark “forrest green” thus its name. The room is not “flush” with the existing front or back of the original house, it juts in a few feet on each side, about 4 or so in the back and about 8 in t...
