Woodworking Contest - Whirligig Wars Winners

633 days ago by WoodJediNTraining | 8 comments »

All in all it was a great event with a lot of great entries. I would like to thank all those who participated in the 1st Annual Whirligig Wars Contest. When I presented the idea of holding a whirligig contest to Steve Ramsey (Woodworking For Mere Mortals) he and I agreed it would be a fun summer event. The response was overwhelming with over 6000 video views of the videos relating to the contest and many great comments from woodworkers all over. So it was decided early on that this would be ...

Nakashima-esque Coffee Table #2: Step-by-step Tabletop Continued

636 days ago by Donowoodworks | 0 comments »

I got a bit more time to work on my tabletop today and it is coming along! I think that the longest part remaining is going to be cutting the butterfly dovetails to keep the cracks from spreading. One edge on the bottom is a mess. It will take some time, but I plan on at least 100 years of service out of a piece of furniture when I build, so it will be worth it. I want to keep away from straight lines in this piece, so I used a curve to draw the edges of the table. The curve is adju...

Nakashima-esque Coffee Table #1: Step-by-step Tabletop

637 days ago by Donowoodworks | 4 comments »

I have been itching to make a table for a while now. Not just any table, mind you, but a live-edge table made from a slab or two. When summer began I told myself that I would do it, and while I was browsing the internet looking for wood slabs, I came across a gentleman who had literally hundreds of slabs sitting in his back yard, waiting to be sold.I looked up the address and saw that it was close to some family members, some seven hours of driving away. “Perfect excuse.” I tho...

My Hand Planes- Meet the Boys #1: Stanley No.4 1/2 Bench plane with shop-made Tote.

649 days ago by Johnnyblot | 13 comments »

This is a Stanley no.4 1/2 that I built up from parts. The Tote is a sandwich of 3 pieces of bubinga, in a ‘Z’ configuration glued to 2 acrylic tote profiles with maple cheeks.my original idea was to use brass sheet but I didn’t have any to hand so I used clear acrylic sheet [from a car registration plate]. Also I fitted a Quangsheng Blade & Chipbreaker assembley. The body was first stripped and repainted and the surfaces reground. The mouth needed to ope...

The Maloof Library Series #12: Just a shoe bench

674 days ago by ScottMorrison | 6 comments »

Hi everyone, Here’s a Maloof Inspired Shoe Bench built a while back, but the templates and instruction booklet are now available. This one was built from Bubinga, which made it a bit heavier than normal, but will probably outlast my grandkids. Quite a fun little project, especially my favorite part….the handles. Enjoy!
