1582 days ago by rsmith71 | 7 comments »

Just had to add my own free wood gloat. Last fall a friend of a friend decided to clean out his workshop. My friend called me and asked if I was interested. I couldn’t get there fast enough. We loaded up in my truck and hit the road. Let me say first I thought I might get 2 or 3 boards out of this trip but decided what the heck. We get there and talk to the guy and he’s decided he doesn’t have the room for everything he had and we started loading my truck up. And kept loadin...

Lacewood Lock #2: Lock Center And Inlay

1583 days ago by deeman | 2 comments »

Today I worked on the front lock face. I put a inlayed piece of bubinga for the key hole trim. This was my first try, just a simple circle. After a few practice pieces I worked on the project part. Turned out pretty good I think. I got the grain off a little. I then cut out the lock body and made the spring. The spring is a piece of hickory 1/16 thick 5/8 wide and 2 7/8 long

Lumber Supply Resource In the Midwest

1673 days ago by Andy Brownell | 7 comments »

I recently came across a supply of lumber from a business here in Cincinnati, OH, Midwest Woodworking. It is owned by a second generation businessman, Frank David. The warehouse he has is probably well over 40,000 sq feet. Spread out across 2 floors are some of the longest complete boules of lumber I’ve ever seen in Sapele, Mahogany and Makore. He lets customers dig through some of the most amazing piles of lumber and pick your favorite boards. One board, or 1,000’s of bd/ft, ...

How to find and harvest legal burls!

1731 days ago by OregonBurls | 37 comments »

Hey everyone, It was suggested that I start a discussion on how to find and harvest burls. Please give your input also. I don’t deal with straight grain that often. I cut and sell burls for a living so here is what I know. It is illegal to harvest a burl without permission. of course if it is on your own property you can give yourself permission. What I do is put an ad on Craig’s list saying I want your burls. Most people don’t know what burls are. So you don’t get that many calls....

After thinking about the possible solutions and having to keep the structural solidity, I dec...
