Before I can chronicle more of Moby Plank, which I’m itching to do, I need to get the mesquite legs and stretchers made. In order for me to complete the legs, which will be carved out of 5×5x 36 blocks of mesquite, I need a band saw much bigger than the little hobbiest one I have. I can’t afford a band saw until the project is completed, and I get paid. Hence a conundrum. After pondering possible possible solutions, and my wife objecting to me selling the kids, I struck u...

Sorry it has taken me so long to post the final part to this blog series. Life just gets in the way sometimes. However, here it is and I hope you enjoy it. In this episode I wanted to look at using a hand brace and explore some of the so called hints and tips out there to see if they really are useful. I’ll also show you how to get in touch with your inner level.
I’m assuming you’ve sharpened your auger bits like I showed you in the last episode. A sharp auger bit is paramount for drilling...

Well here we are at the finale of this brace restoration (DON’T YOU DARE SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM YET!).
At the end of Part 3 I wiped the Head and the Sweep handle over with methylated spirit to get rid of some of the grease and grime that had accumulated. Now its time to rub the wood down prior to re-finishing. I start with P120, then P180, P240, finishing with P320. I know some people would frown at this and say I’m destroying the patina that has built up over the years. Sometimes that’s a v...

I thought I’d mix it up a bit in this part of the blog and record a video where I:
Discuss what to look for when you pick up a secondhand brace and consider buying it.
Mention variations in design and size and why you would use one size over another.
Address Racerglen’s question on restoring plated braces.
Answer lysdexic’s question as to why the Yankee 2100 represents the pinnacle of brace development.
YouTube only allows uploads up to 15 minutes in length (...

Hey gang hope your weekend was enjoyable. It was a rather humid and….crowded day in these parts of NJ…LOL.
But I was happy to get back home from the traffic way back in the woods and on route to my shop to fire up the wire wheel, WD-40 and spirit of better times and clean some nice auction finds for the tool tote!
Let’s take a look at some of the pics!
Pic 1-2:
Found this very cool Disston keyhole saw in an old tool box at the auction this weekend….it was o...

My husband spotted this in the cabinet at the Habitat Restore, and pointed it out to me. I’m glad he saw it – I normally never look in the cabinet, because it’s all jewelry stuff in there. It’s a Miller's Falls brace, and a bunch of bits.
The brace is in excellent condition, and works perfectly. I cleaned the old grease out of the chuck, and gave it a wipe of WD-40. The mark on the chuck reads “Millers Falls Co / Millers Falls, Mass. U.S.AR...

The Bee’s bunk bed needs some bed rails. I spent a few hours staring at the bed and scribbling little sketches, then another hour or so wandering around the hardware store and lumber yard buying stuff I probably don’t need, and have spent another nice while this afternoon getting started making the rails.
First up, assemble these parts
into slots to to fit these rails
I cut all the wood to measure yesterday, which involved lots of running up and down from the ...
