Oh For Keepsake!

10-30-2009 06:22 PM by thewoodwhisperer | 32 comments »

Its that time of year again: HOLIDAY PROJECT TIME! So this year, I decided to make a few little keepsake boxes, thanks to some advice from The Great WOODini. I also took inspiration from a box Nicole keeps on her nightstand and developed a new design that is much more practical for the average woodworker to make. The boxes feature a secret locking pin. Once removed, the lid slides off on a sliding dovetail. And as always with these holiday gift projects, you can modify them by trying diffe...

Tool tote travel #3: finger joints on a template / jig.

10-29-2010 11:28 PM by mafe | 14 comments »

Tool tote travel 3finger joints on a template / jig This is third part of the tool tote travel. Now I have cut dovetails by hand, so it’s time to play with machines again…This time some finger joints, since it’s a learning experience. I bought some years ago a router template for finger joints, and half blind dovetails.I paid 100$ on a sale and never opened the box… So now it was time! I found a 10 mm router bit as the set needed, and made a test cut on some plywood… O...

In this video I show you how to make a simple yet elegant lift lid box. These little boxes can be made with with different woods to give them their own character, and due to the simplicity they can be made in batches.. They make a great gift to give someone. The boxes in the videos are made from Spalted Pecan, White Oak, & Mahogany. Each Box was finished with 2 coats of Danish Oil to bring out the natural beauty and color of the woods. Also in the video I talk about an upcoming project...

Rance's References

09-21-2011 05:19 AM by rance | 0 comments »

This is an online collection of my own woodworking references(& links), both from LJ as well as elsewhere. Many times I want to give someone a link but I don’t seem to have it handy. I’m hoping I can refer back to this to find a particular link and pass it on when the need arises. Feel free to use this in any way you wish. As time goes on, it will be more useful. You might even find it helpful.     PROJECTS/TECHNIQUES: BOXES” Resawing and Grai...

Small Woodturnings

03-13-2012 06:09 PM by Brett | 4 comments »

Hey again Everbody! Since I have been into woodturning lately, I thought that I would share a quick video of some of the small projects that I have doing on the lathe. Nothing fancy, just some small lidded boxes. Maybe this will inspire someone else to get out there and, as Capt. Eddie Castelin would say, “make some shavin’s”.

Plane Restorations #1: Stanley No. 45 Boxes Reproduction Graphics

10-09-2012 01:57 AM by grfrazee | 7 comments »

I bought a No. 45, but the cutters did not come with the boxes that were included at the original purchase, all those decades ago. Not wanting to spend a large amount of money for real boxes, I’ve opted to make my own reproductions. However, I wanted them to be as close to the original versions as possible. The astute reader will note that the No. 45 cutter boxes had graphics on them displaying the contents of each box. These tend to get destroyed over time and are very rare to be...

Woodworking Books #1: Box Making

03-25-2009 11:31 PM by DannyBoy | 3 comments »

I recently decided to go on a box making journey in woodworking. The various skills that one can learn by making simple and small boxes and structures can lead to big improvements in skill while performing larger work later on. Plus, it’s a good way to use up scraps that are laying around the woodshop. My first step in taking on any new style or project is typically a trip to the library and sometimes a further trip to the bookstore. (I’m lucky in that my public library has an...

Box Building #3: Photography Light Box

08-12-2011 05:22 PM by Kent Shepherd | 12 comments »

I posted one of my boxes earlier in the week and promised I would blog my light box.If you have researched this you will know I obviously did not come up with this idea. In fact, I think there are others on Ljs. This is simply my version. I am a woodworker, not a photographer, so take all this with a grain of salt. As I develop the box further, I will add to the blog. I have not done anything yet I didn’t tweak over time, so why change now, huh! It’s called design evolution, not f...
