I will start this blog the same way I started the one on making a Lazy Susan.
Now before I get started on this little demonstration of how I do it, let me caution you on a couple things. IF you try anything like this, take the plate that your saw blade comes up through and close that hole completely up with a thin piece of wood. Make sure it is even with the top, with no gaps and no lips to catch the pieces. You want it smooth. Then with a “Hollow ground plywood blade” come up from the bot...

I’ve thought carefully and done a heck of a lot of research on marketing, and brand building, and all that business related stuff. I’ve raised enough money to get started. I’ve built up an inventory.
And now, FINALLY, i’m almost ready to start a business selling turned pens.
It’s just going to be a side job. An additional source of money, and a bit of practice in the world of business.i still need to do some things though.
#1. I NEED A NAME : iR...

My mom is doing some amazing bead work. one time when I went with her to the beads store, I saw a small box/cabinet that the store used to store (no pun intended) the beads in, and thought it would make for a great way for my my to have all her beads organized – and I can make it.
After completing my handtool box (at least the general construction of if) it made me think that I can scale it down and use the same ‘general design idea’ for the beads box. plus some additions...

OK, so yeah – another blog about a router table, but since I’m going to make one , might as well document it while I go, maybe someone can benefit from this.
I’ve had a Rockler router table top + plate + fence which I got when I bought my router (Bosch 2 1/4hp). It had the misfurtune of being on the floor when my basement was flooded a couple of years ago, so that top was ruined. I since have been planning to replace it with a shop-built version, and make a full enclosed ...

I saw this design in a finewoodworking article, and really liked the design, and functionality of the piece, and decided to follow along. I did not use FWW plans, but created my own to fit my space, and needs, while keeping the general design, and concept of the FWW piece in mind. (I made mine, smaller, and shallower then FWW cabinet, also the interior is much different).
This is basically a fingerjointed box that the doors are cut off from (to match grain) and hinged on a piano hinge. pre...

This is my first post here at lumberjocks so I thought I’d start off with a design I’m considering building. I’d like to have a dresser-top valet that’s large enough to hold two drawers. The bottom drawer is for things like cufflinks, rings, etc. and the top drawer is to hold five large (40+ mm) watches.
Above that will be a shelf covered in flocking with an area to hold a cell phone, iPod, etc. behind.
What I haven’t worked out yet are 1) are the dimensio...

The input was for the most part was to use Wenge for the interior. So….here it is. Please keep in mind I have not decided on a finish yet. I am leaning towards a Danish Oil type of blend.
Trays in the box
Trays removed
Trays made of Wenge and Ambrosia Maple.
Bottom of the trays, showing off the Ambrosia Maple.
Please pardon the photography…I’m not great at it. Should have used a tripod.

Ok fellow LJ’ers. I am working on a new jewelry box and I would like your input on what wood to use on the interior for the dividers and trays.
The box is made with Lacewood, with Padauk and Wenge stripes and accents. The box does not have a finish on it yet (just FYI, I am planning on using a gloss poly and then rubbing out back down to a semi-gloss.)
Here is what I currently have in stock.

Houndstooth dovetails use varying sizes of tails (or varying sizes of pins…depending on your perspective). I’ve wanted to try them for quite a while now. This blog shows most of the process I’m currently going through. To get the effect it seems to me you need more tails/pins per corner than one would normally think about. In this case like a few of my other recent boxes posted, I’m using Caribbean rosewood and curly maple.
Most often, (when you see them at all) these are done by alte...
