Well I’ve been following all of the “plane” talk with great interest. I have never been completely satisfied with the finishes that I obtain on my projects (mostly small projects). I have made up my mind that I should try the Card Scraper and a good Hand Plane. I have a Stanley Block plane, Stanley Low Angle Block and a Stanley #5. Well after many frustrations (or as I tell my airmen, “learning situations”), I finally finished my Trinket/Shadow box. Now, I look at all the boxes on this site and I realize that I have got a loooong way to go before I catch up to many of you box-builders. But, for my first box, I am happy with it.

Ok – so now I’m on to making the box itself. I’ve not accomplished much today as I’m expecting company and spent a lot of shop time cleaning and preparing a meal. But the slow process is ok I’m really seeing things a little differently being forced to go slowly. It’s also a test of my patience trying to take pictures of the process along the way. Ok – so I said that I was going to pick a project from one of my favorite books and then post my progress on line. So here we go. I’ve chosen as my first project a box from Doug Stowe’s book – Basic Box Making – A sliding top Pencil box. The first thing I decided about this project was that I wanted to cut the fingers on the router and not the table saw. Well, yesterday I decided to mortise my box to accept the hinges. I don’t have a jig for this, but since they are very small hinges I decided to free hand them with the router and a straight bit. I practiced a couple of times on a piece of scrap and got the depth perfect, then I made my cuts on the box and they turned out great! Next I decided to connect the lid and the box with the hinges and here is where the problems started…

Well, here it goes…the long story. On my last tour to Iraq I was stationed at Balad AB, the largest FOB (Forward Operating Base) in the AOR (Area of Responsibility). I was in charge of a 110 person security team known as the FPs (Force Protection).
