Just for Fun... #5: Strong to the finish

73 days ago by littlecope | 4 comments »

There hasn’t been a lot to report on this lately. We’re talking finishing here and it’s pretty droll stuff. If you recall we left off hereNow my Dad had a great suggestion regarding the prominent “stripes” on the lid, which are, of course, merely leftover stain in the hollows of the contour. He said, “You ought to paint them. Paint them black. Shiny black..” And so I didI actually painted them again the following morning after this. The first coat just...

Bandsaw Box Bandit #5: Its all finished except the finish

109 days ago by Walnut_Weasel | 7 comments »

Well I was finally able to finish my second box yesterday. That is, everything is finished but the finish… I went to Home Depot to get some clear oil, and for some reason the crappy depot here in our small town does not carry it! I knew I should have bought some when I was at Lowes earlier in the week! Oh and I still need to buy flocking for the inside. That is also impossible to find in this small town. I guess it is time to buy it online! I have also noticed that I need to wo...

Bandsaw Box Bandit #2: My Second Bandsaw Box - Day 1

118 days ago by Walnut_Weasel | 3 comments »

Well today I began work on my second bandsaw box. I am going to make a box very similar to the first (see Bandsaw Box Bandit #1) but this time I have a few ideas to overcome some of the problems I encountered while making the first box. However, just 3 cuts in I realized the root cause of one of my problems. I began by cross cutting the board to proper length. Then I made the first arced cut to form the top of the lid. Finally I made a second arced cut to form the bottom of the lid. T...

Knitting box #8: Slides, Knobs, Top Separation

161 days ago by skywalker01 | 2 comments »

I set up the router table to make the slots for the slide rails. I just used a 1/2” straight bit to make the groove and I sized my rails to fit later. So here I used a chisel to square up the fronts of the grooves that I just routed. This is not really necessary it will just make it easier to adjust the drawers forward or backward if they don’t line up just right, Which they didn’t in the end. I had to remove just a bit more towards the front on one side so that they ...

We end up making these three or four times a year, so I decided to post about them because there are so many uses for them. Our cut-off boxes end up getting mitered in a few different angles and we fianlly have one for 45 degrees and a seperate for 90. It’s a quite useful and versitile tool, a must have in all shops. Step by step instructions Bulk woodshop supplies

Knitting box #1: Getting the rough shape of the box

190 days ago by skywalker01 | 2 comments »

So I started with 8/4 zebra wood that I bought off my brother. He builds bass guitars for a living and had some left over wood. I resawed the wood down to about 5/8” on my craftsman 12”(given to me by my father in law) with a Woodslicer 3-4, 1/2” blade from highland woodworking… Amazing blade, if you have a bandsaw and need a resaw blade for it check them out because it cuts like a hot knife through butter compared to ANY other blade I’ve used yet. https://www.hi...

Bandsaw Boxes Made Easy #9: The Grand Finale.

195 days ago by JonH | 8 comments »

Remember the chunk of wood from inside your drawer? That works nicely for a handle since the grain of the wood is all consistent. If not, you can put anything in for a handle, a dowel, a screw, a nail, a pull from the hardware store, a hole, you name it, just get that drawer open somehow. That is up to you. Once all the pieces are glued up, just sand up the body of the drawer so it fits nicely in the body. Once that is good, apply your finish. Be careful not to put too much in the dra...

Bandsaw Boxes Made Easy #7: Lets hollow out that drawer.

196 days ago by JonH | 2 comments »

While the body of the Bandsaw Box is drying, you can work on the drawer. Cut ¼” to ½” off the front and back of the drawer. Make sure you label the pieces so they go back together properly. We will then cut out the piece left over in the middle to create the cavity for the drawer. This can be anything you want, but it basically creates the amount of storage space in your drawer. It could be square or curved, but with a bandsaw you could accomplish nearly anything for this task. Just mak...
