Well today I began work on my second bandsaw box. I am going to make a box very similar to the first (see Bandsaw Box Bandit #1) but this time I have a few ideas to overcome some of the problems I encountered while making the first box. However, just 3 cuts in I realized the root cause of one of my problems. I began by cross cutting the board to proper length. Then I made the first arced cut to form the top of the lid. I set up the router table to make the slots for the slide rails. I just used a 1/2” straight bit to make the groove and I sized my rails to fit later. So here I used a chisel to square up the fronts of the grooves that I just routed. This is not really necessary it will just make it easier to adjust the drawers forward or backward if they don’t line up just right, Which they didn’t in the end. We end up making these three or four times a year, so I decided to post about them because there are so many uses for them. Our cut-off boxes end up getting mitered in a few different angles and we fianlly have one for 45 degrees and a seperate for 90. It’s a quite useful and versitile tool, a must have in all shops. So I started with 8/4 zebra wood that I bought off my brother. He builds bass guitars for a living and had some left over wood. Remember the chunk of wood from inside your drawer? That works nicely for a handle since the grain of the wood is all consistent. If not, you can put anything in for a handle, a dowel, a screw, a nail, a pull from the hardware store, a hole, you name it, just get that drawer open somehow. That is up to you. Once all the pieces are glued up, just sand up the body of the drawer so it fits nicely in the body. Once that is good, apply your finish. Be careful not to put too much in the dra...
Glue the drawer together using the front, body and the back of the drawer. Remember to keep the chunk left over from the inside of the drawer to use for a drawer handle.
While the body of the Bandsaw Box is drying, you can work on the drawer. Cut ¼” to ½” off the front and back of the drawer. Make sure you label the pieces so they go back together properly. We will then cut out the piece left over in the middle to create the cavity for the drawer. This can be anything you want, but it basically creates the amount of storage space in your drawer.
