I’ve had a couple of 12-14 hour workdays this week and have not had the opportunities for restoring any planes. I decided to take a little time this evening to discuss items that will be needed for the restoration process. The basis for this list comes from the Ernie Conover Video on Reclaiming flea market planes. Hopefully, he will update this video and release on DVD.
The list is as follows:
Lap Plate – used to lap the sole and sides of a plane- Plastic Laminate – ...

Well I just researched via “tags” the book forums and there are a few on LJ’s…but they are mostly regarding skills books—-which makes sense for wood workers…
But recently I have been dreaming of building a boat…on a 5 year plan (if you look at my projects you will see I am not ready lol)...and so I have been getting lots of books at my local library…on boat building and other titles too…
But one of the books that I picked up is not a...

I recently decided to go on a box making journey in woodworking. The various skills that one can learn by making simple and small boxes and structures can lead to big improvements in skill while performing larger work later on. Plus, it’s a good way to use up scraps that are laying around the woodshop. My first step in taking on any new style or project is typically a trip to the library and sometimes a further trip to the bookstore. (I’m lucky in that my public library has an...

I couldn’t find any reference for this on the site, so if I am re-posting the obvious, please forgive me.
Project Gutenburg has 3 very detailed books on building mission furniture. they contain detailed plans (although not as detailed as some modern books) and they have LOTS of plans in them. The construction ideas are also very enlightening and worth browsing through (for example this swing)
to make a long story short:

This is the beginning of a listing of handplane related books. This is primarily intended to be a personal reference. But, please feel free to suggest books if you have any recommendations. I’m especially interested in recommendations for out of print books.
I own and can recommend the following books:
The Handplane Book (Paperback) by Garrett Hack – Excellent book, good coverage of the use of all types of hand planes.
Working with Handplanes (New Best of Fine Woodwor...

In March of this year I attended a wood show in Toronto and had the privilege of not only speaking with Rob Cosman but creating a ribbon of wood.
Today I had the honour of interviewing Rob and learning about his woodworking history and plans for the future.
The History
Rob was born and raised into the woodworking world. His father, a shop teacher at the time of Rob’s birth, became a contractor when Rob was about two years of age. Rob’s earliest memory ...

While not particularly woodworking, he uses wood in many of his jigs and clamps and presses. Too, he calls his operation “Quercus Press,” and Quercus, as we all know is the genus of the oak trees. It looks like the covers are glued over white oak boards as well. Moreover, though, this video is simply a maker’s dream. From the old linotype machine whirring and clanking away to line up type as he presses keys, to the vaults of old engravings he gained access to, to the many cl...

Someone once said, “Plan your work and work your plan.” Or was it, “Plan your woodworking at work, so you can plan on working on wood after work?” Either way, I have a plan. Over the last several years I have spent a good deal of my time building spaces in the virtual world of Second Life. I have designed hundreds of pieces of virtual furniture and I want to learn how to bring them into the real world.
I realize that most readers are now scratching their heads with their tape measu...
