Simple Hanging Bookshelf

598 days ago by A_Train | 6 comments »

Well, here is my entry for the Bookcase Challenge. I actually completed this project a few weeks before reading about the competition, but thought this would be a great opportunity to learn SketchUp. My wife was looking for something that would allow her to have easy access to her reference materials while working at her desk. I came up with this simple bookcase. Simple Hanging Bookcase The overall dimensions of the bookcase are 30” wide by 25 1/8 “ high. The three shelves a...

Greene and Greene Book Case/Computer Cabinet.

584 days ago by remdam | 6 comments »

I’ve been planing on making a book case for a spare room in my house for awhile now. This contest was great in getting me to focus and finally finish the design. If you’re familiar with the Greene brothers and the Gamble house, you’ll see a lot of the design for this book case comes from the smaller of the two living room book cases. It’s a good size to fit into a guest bedroom. Besides holding books, I also want the piece to hide a small server computer, DSL router, eth...

Sliding Dovetail Bookcase for challenge

588 days ago by wheresmytools | 3 comments »

I’ve never used SketchUp, but do like coming up with different designs. And Sketchup seems to be pretty easy to come up to learn. I made a similar bookcase with stopped dadoes but it wasn’t too sturdy. So I had to nail on a back panel, making it one-sided. This one has sliding dovetails making it easy to make up and fast to assemble. The SketchUp makes the dovetails easy; just draw a rectangle, use the pencil to draw the area that the router bit would cut out and then use t...

(Yet another?) Bookshelf

584 days ago by Alin Dobra | 7 comments »

The design of this entry in the Challenge04 contest is based on a bookshelf I build for my son ( you can see the project here: http://lumberjocks.com/projects/3968 ) This design and the actual bookshelf I build for my son try to address a number of things I do not like about most bookshelves I see in stores, the web, this site, etc. 1. Non Boxy I do not particularly (or at all) like bookshelves that are boxy. A completely enclosed bookshelf traps the items inside and makes them out of r...

Challenge04 entry...Shoji screen inspired Book Case...better get this in now!

587 days ago by Ryan Shervill | 22 comments »

Hello all. Being as our second child is due on Sunday, and my wife is feeling that she may be early, I figured I’d better get this in ASAP :) I am new to Sketchup, and far from a “SU guru”, but I hope I managed to do at least a passable job on this…forgive me for any errors. This bookshelf is inspired by Japanese Shogi Screens. Built to be very open and “airy”, the design allows it to be used both in the center of the room as a divider (Like a Shoji S...

Arts and Crafts Bookcase with Magazine Drawers for Challenge04

584 days ago by blackdogwoodshop | 7 comments »

My Design ProcessFor this contest, I wanted to design an Arts and crafts style bookcase with some unique features. When designing a new piece of furniture, I prefer to start from the intended uses of the piece, any requirements for the dimensions, and any preferences for the style. In this case, the primary requirement was that the bookcase be “one of a kind”. Based on this, I developed my own short list of requirements for the piece as follows:1. The bookcase must offer a s...

Bookcase Challenge entry

607 days ago by Greg Wurst | 15 comments »

Well, for kicks and giggles I decided to try to create a bookcase entry in Sketchup for the competition. I have no delusions of winning anything, but I thought I’d give it a try. I though of what I could do to make a traditional bookcase stand-out, and not coming-up with anything I decided to mess-around with curved surfaces in Sketchup. After some tinkering, I had a basic design that you see here: It’s more of an art piece than a bookcase I suppose, but it was t...
