Hello all. Being as our second child is due on Sunday, and my wife is feeling that she may be early, I figured I’d better get this in ASAP :)

This is so exciting – New era at LumberJocks.com begins right now – the era of video tutorials. I just finished our first video tutorial screencast titled ”How to submit entry into the Bookcase Design Challenge”. It outlines all of the steps in posting the blog entry, embedding the pictures as well as the final project file and then submitting it properly to the Challenge.

Was able to swing by Rockler this week to pick up some hinges, a cupboard key latch and a shelf pin hole jig. & Finally had a chance to put in some decent time on the bookcase today.
1. Sanding2. Installed lapped slats in the back3. Drilled the adjustable shelf pin holes4. Mounted the door with the hinges5. Installed the cupboard key latch.

My Design ProcessFor this contest, I wanted to design an Arts and crafts style bookcase with some unique features. When I read about challenge 04 in Popular Woodworking Newsletter my first thought was to give it a try. The next thought was to design something that didn’t look like a box. Then I remembered that I had turned a square book case 45 degrees and put it into a corner. From there I took inspiration from other project I have built. This is a Greene and Greene inspired bookcase with pinned mortise-and-tenon joints with square ebony plugs to decorate the pinned joints. There are also breadboards ends to keep the top flat. The corner pieces (or legs) are slightly tapered to be wider at the bottom. The back of the bookcase is finished so it can be placed all or partially away from a wall. All side of the book case feature a cloud lift pattern.

Well, here is my entry for the Bookcase Challenge. I actually completed this project a few weeks before reading about the competition, but thought this would be a great opportunity to learn SketchUp.

Well, for kicks and giggles I decided to try to create a bookcase entry in Sketchup for the competition. I have no delusions of winning anything, but I thought I’d give it a try.
